Good question.
Many people, with the best of intentions, put up a web page, go so far as to register it with the search engines, only to find that it does not show up when they do a search for it.
This is like building a beautiful shop or store, and placing it into the middle of the Ghobi dessert. No one will ever find you there. And the same holds true on the Internet. You must engineer your pages properly to enable the Search Engines to properly index your site. Or all of your hard work will be lost in cyberspace as far as your visitors are concerned.
It's easy to understand why so many people are rushing to build makeshift web sites, following ill-gotten advice, and shooting themselves inadvertently in the foot. The appeal is awesome.
Never, in the history of human kind has the potential existed to reach
50 million people with such meager resources. The irony of the situation is this: The ease of the task makes it less likely to actually reach that intended audience. That's because it is also easy for 50 million other people. In other words, you have a growing number of people who want to achieve that wonderful moment when someone notices their Web Site in this vast resource, growing by one per minute, and experience their 15 megabytes of fame. That means you have competition.
Ok, So What Do I Need to Do?
****************************
You need to make the critical distinctions that the vast amount of people are not: Engineer your Web Site to be properly found in teh Search Engines.
A properly engineered Web page will take into consideration a number of critical areas. This list is far from exhaustive. In order to be properly indexed with the search engines, these are bare minimum:
1. Title your pages incorporating important keywords. Don't leave the title blank.
2. Use Meta tags. Include one for a description of your site, and one for keywords. Some of the biggest search engines are penalizing for descriptions and keyword tags that are too long, or contain too many repeats of the same word. You will need to do your research to find out what the criteron are.
Would you like to check your "Meta Tags" to see if they are properly optimized without breaking the rules? Go to "Meta Medic" http://www.northernwebs.com/set/setsimjr.html
All you have to do is type in your Web Page address, and it will generate a report on your meta tags. You will learn if your tags are too big, or if you repeat them too many times. It even contains error checking for some of the more common errors.
3. Weave your keywords artfully into the text of your Web Page. Make a list of keywords before you write your content and use them as often as you reasonably can.
Do not use the following "tricks". Search Engines are getting smarter faster.
A) White on white text. Adding a hundred keywords in a text colour that is the same as the background. No one looking at your site can see it (unless they highlight a suspiciously large blank area of your Web Page and find it) That's considered spam and will get your site banned on some search engines
B) Repeating keywords over and over in your Meta-Tags. Search Engines now know to look for it, and will drop the relevancy of your site accordingly.
C) Repeating the title of your Web Page a few times in the code. It is quickly coming to light that it is another "cheat".
Let me offer you this to think about:
The search engines are rapidly evolving, with enormous amounts of cash flowing in. They are constatly upgrading the sofistication and intelligence of their software. Soon, they will be smart enough to know all of the loop holes. So, I would advise you not to use them.
There are excellent ways to build a site that properly addresses the search engines, and reach the top 10 or 20 against several thousands.
By the way, if you do have a web site, and would like to know how the major search engines rank it against other web sites, using your chosen keywords, go here: http://www.rankthis.com
This site will tell you if your site comes up in the top 200 of the major Search Engines. All you do is type in the keywords that someone looking foryour service or product might, then click on the search Engine to check. It will rank your site against the top 200.
If you find that your rankings are paltry, or you do not come up at all, feel free to email me or go to my Web Site http://www.calgary.shaw.wave.ca/~tholmes/h_resume.htm and click on the link "Websites. You can get more information there.
The idea I want to convey is this:
Do not register with the major search engines as an after thought. Search engine registration and placement issues must be planned out *before* you build your page. If this is done properly, however, you could quickly find your self with enough traffic to blow the springs off of Your Web Page Counter.
Why are Search Engines Important?
*********************************
Did you know that 90% of all Internet users access at least one of the major search engines to find web sites of interest?
If you want to be found on the Internet, you must know how to utilize these powerful indexing tools. You will be indexed in a sea of literally millions of other Web Sites. It is critical that your web site is ranked toward the top. But is it possible? Yes.
Today, more and more Web Design and promotion services have to make it their business to be familiar with each of the major search engines. I know we do, and it takes up a lot of time to stay abreast of their quirks.
Let's cover some of the latest information about Search Engines. If you are not familiar with them, or would like to know what they are and how to use them, take a moment to nab my Search Engine tutorial. send mailto:iot.help@shaw.wave.ca
and in the subjetc type SearchEngines (No spaces) It will arrive before you finish this article.
Many of the most important "Search Engines" index your page by looking at the way the actual programming was done. Using "robots" or "spiders", they assess the actual engineered structure of your web site, and then rank your site against other sites according to this.
Even for the people who took the time familiarize themselves with the engineering aspects, many of them tried to trick the search engines using techniques that were so blatant and unethical, that the search engines now have set limits. In other words, even if you knew the ropes three months ago, they have begun to drastically change.
