Rick's six-year run of being named to the all-star team began with the first-ever game in 1933. Manager Connie Mack's respect for him was such that Ferrell caught all 9 innings of the first midseason classic in 1933.
He was a stand-out defensively with a fine arm, and he had a knack for handling the knuckler. At one time with the Senators there were four knuckle-ballers in the starting rotation. He also hit over .300 four times during his 18-year career.
Several factors stopped Rick Ferrell from getting a strong defensive reputation. For starters, the press focused on winning teams, spreading credit from player to player. And writers found that a catcher could be blamed for pitching mediocrity. Upon his retirement as a player-coach with the 1947 Senators, Rick Ferrell had rewritten the AL record for most games caught with 1,805 appearances. Approaching his eightieth birthday, Ferrell was finally honored by the Hall of Fame in 1984.
