Given the name Senor because of his Spanish background, Alfonso Lopez began his pro career with hometown Tampa in the Florida State League in 1925. Lopez was sixteen years old at the time. During his first season, Lopez was chosen to catch Walter Johnson as a team of all-stars played a Florida exhibition. "Son, some day you're going to be a great catcher," was Johnson's fabled farewell to the teen.
Lopez had sworn off baseball at age ten after getting hit in the face with a ball. The fact that he'd been skipping school to play baseball was uncovered when his chums called an ambulance for the fallen Lopez. But Lopez forgave the sport after becoming team caqptain for his junior high school. Older brother Emilio played catcher for amateur teams and encouraged Alfonso to do the same.
Lopez broke in with the Brooklyn Dodgers, playing for manager Wilbert "robbie" Robinson, who couldn't remember his catcher's name and called the five-foot-eleven inch Lopez "that little Cuban." When Lopez retired as a player he had rewritten records for most career games caught overall (1,918) and in the National League (1,861). His longevity streak would survive until 1987. In 1941, Lopez tied an NL record by going an entire season without a single passed ball. Al Lopez gained entrance to the Hall of Fame in the Manager's Wing in 1977.
