Life in America was far from easy, the language barrier, customs, ways of life were obstacles to overcome. They farmed in the Loveland, Colorado area using horses and horse-drawn machinery. They helped build the ditch to carry water for the crops and help build the first sugar beet factory in Loveland, Colorado. The family worked in the fields as soon as they were old enough to walk. They helped thin, hoe and top the sugar beets, as well as helped with the beans, corn, grain and alfalfa. They would also work for other farmers in their fields. They survived terrible snowstorms and a flood. Times were very hard. They managed to buy a car, an Overland, and in 1918 moved to Hillrose, Colorado.

This move was by horse and wagon. There they farmed raising sugar beets, corn, grain, beans and alfalfa. In 1925 they bought another vehicle a Willis-Knight. In 1928-1929 Jacob purchased a 160 acre farm at Windsor, Colorado and the family moved there using horse and wagons. They farmed there several years and then trade that farm for 80 acres South of Kersey, Colorado. They then purchased the 160 acres adjoining the 80. They lived there until retiring, moving first to Millikin, Colorado then to LaSalle, Colorado and finally to Greeley, Colorado where they live until there death.

Anna Marie worked in the fields along with her husband and children, as well as taking care of the home, cooking, canning, sewing, washing clothes by hand, keeping everything spotless.

She never complained, and would sing religious songs in German as she did her work. She faithfully read her Bible daily, and would listen in later years to a Religious Radio station.

Jacob and Anna Marie Lapp raised 11 healthy children teaching them to work, follow the Lord and the value of money.

Jacob and Louise after their marriage worked on farms in the Greeley, Colorado area during the depression years. Jacob worked on the building of the Army base in Cheyenne, Wyoming in the early years of WW2. He also worked for Union Pacific Railroad in the Big Round House in Cheyenne, Wyoming where he helped service the trains.

In 1942 Jacob and Louise started farming in the Loveland, Colorado area, and in 1947 moved to the Masters, Colorado area and farmed until 1950. In 1948 they purchased a 160 acre farm south of Wiggins, Colorado where they raised sugar beets, beans, corn, alfalfa, and wheat. They always had milk cows and chickens for eggs, milk and butter.

They sold that farm in 1963 and rented a farm in the Ault, Colorado area. He purchased another farm 23 miles south of Wiggins, Colorado about 1964 and built a house on the property.

Jacob and Louise both 87 years old still live there and dry land farm, raising wheat. Of coarse they still have cattle, but do not milk any longer .

They are both very active, and will celebrate their 67th anniversary February 27, 2000.
