Dann Bilardello, as a major league catcher, is one of many underappreciated backups to the more, well known, catchers. It is only
after their playing days that these guys come to the forefront as managers in both the minors and in the majors. Dann is one of them. So far in a brief,
three-year, managerial career, Bilardello has led his teams to a 180-169 record. In 2002 he guided the Rookie League Great Falls Dodgers to a 47-28 record
and the Pioneer League title. After that he skippered at the Class A league with the South Georgia Waves (Dodgers), Columbus Catfish (Dodgers in the South
Atlantic League) and in 2005 he was named as the manager of the Red Sox affiliate, the Wilmington Blue Rocks.
Dann did not have a distinguised playing career. He was drafted in the 1st round (7th pick) of the 1978 amateur draft. He struggled with injuries as a Dodger farmhand before the Reds claimed him in the 1982 rule V draft and made him their catcher for 1983. A dead-pull hitter, he only batted .238 as a rookie. His catching mechanics were excellent, but his game-calling was found lacking. From 1985 to 1992 he was traded, released, signed as a Free Agent, released, signed with a variety of teams: Montreal Expos, Pittsburgh Pirates, San Diego Padres and finally as a New York Met in their minor leagues. His last game was on October 4, 1992.
The knowledge and experienced that Dann gained in his role as a backup and playing on the same squad as Johnny Bench (1983) and other successful catchers provided him with the tools for big success as a manager at the major league level just like other former catchers now managing teams to the World Series..
