The burly receiver was the 1962 Pacific Coast League batting champ and RBI leader. Defensive deficiencies and his lack of speed kept him a backup. Nearly 20 percent of his ML at-bats were as a pinch hitter. 1964 was his best year, catching 97 of the Mets' games and having a decent offensive season.
