Gonzales coined a standard phrase with his pithy assessment of the abilities of a
player he scouted: "Good field, no hit." That could also describe the playing career
of the Cuban-born catcher. Although he played for five NL teams, he is most often
associated with the Cardinals, for whom he served as regular catcher (1916-18 and
1924), longtime coach, and twice as interim manager.
Miguel Angel "Mike" Gonzalez spent almost his entire adult life in baseball, but his role as a trailblazer is hardly known of today.
Amongst Gonzalez's many accomplishments are 17 seasons as a journeyman backstop, 13 years as a big league coach, and the author of the now-famous "Good field, no hit" line used to describe a player he was scouting. He was also the third base coach when Enos "Country" Slaughter made his "Mad Dash" to win the 1946 World Series for the St. Louis Cardinals. But possibly his greatest moment came on Sept. 11, 1938, when the Cardinals fired manager Frankie Frisch and replaced him with Gonzalez, their longtime coach. Thus, he became the first Cuban-born (and Latino) manager in Major League Baseball history.
Gonzalez, who was offered the helm for the remainder of the season only, was a longtime friend and roommate of Frisch's. "I hate to see him go. He's a real pal and a good man. I didn't want him to leave," said Gonzalez after getting the interim job.
The Cards, who were 63-72 under Frisch, ended the 1938 season with an 8-8 mark under their new skipper. Gonzalez would return to the coaching box the next year under Ray Blades. But Gonzalez had another crack at managing in 1940 when the Cardinals fired Blades after 38 games. Filling in on an interim basis, he compiled a 1-5 mark before Billy Southworth took over.
