Wiki and Ben Davis shared the catching duties for the Padres in 2001, but that should change now that Davis has been traded to Seattle. One of the team's most aggressive hitters, Wiki appeared in 64 games for San Diego in 2001, batting .275 with eight homers and 27 RBI. He was especially tough on lefties, hitting .345 against them with five homers in just 58 at-bats. Wiki has shown great improvement at the plate, but his defensive skills are the strongest part of his game. He's agile behind the plate and blocks pitches well. He also has a strong arm, having gunned down 37 percent of would-be basestealers last season.

San Diego pitchers are very comfortable with Wiki behind the plate. After beginning 1999 with Mobile (AA), he found himself on the fast track to the majors, making a brief stop in Las Vegas (AAA) before joining the Padres on August 13 that year. Playing his first big-league game the following day, the Venezuelan collected three hits, including a triple, vs. the Florida Marlins. Wiki became the first San Diego player in 21 years to notch three hits in his ML debut. He finished his 30-game stint with the Padres at .253, with three homers and 12 RBI.
