Left-handed-hitting catchers are tough to find, but the Padres got a good one when they acquired Tom from the Seattle Mariners at the conclusion of 2001. He played in 79 games last season and hit .225, with five homers and 22 RBI. Seattle went 45-10 in his 55 starts and Tom threw out 10 of 36 (28 percent) would-be basestealers. Playing for the Mariners was always a great thrill for him. You see, Tom went to high school in the Seattle area and actually worked in the M's clubhouse as a teenager from 1979-81. He took his baseball knowledge to Edmonds C.C. in Lynnwood, Wash. before moving on to the University of Portland (Ore.), where he was named All-West Coast Conference as a junior and senior. Tom graduated from the school in 1986 with a degree in marketing/management.

This is Tom's second tour of duty with the Padres; his first coming from 1990-92. In addition to the Mariners, he has also worn the uniform of the Cleveland Indians (1988), Milwaukee Brewers (1993), San Francisco Giants (1995-96) and St. Louis Cardinals (1997-98). Tom hit a career-high .291 for the Mariners in 1999 and got off to a good start in 2000 (.252) before undergoing season-ending surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right elbow.
