LaValliere helped make the trade of Pittsburgh favorite Tony Pena look good with a .300 bat and Gold Glove fielding in 1987. He excelled in throwing out potential basestealers and earned a starting spot on the 1986 Cardinals, starting a club rookie record 108 games behind the plate. Signed as a third baseman by the Phillies, the squat LaValliere moved to catcher in 1982. He was MVP in the 1976 Babe Ruth World Series. Mike ranks 76th all-time amongst the 1,662 career catchers for Career Caught Stealing Percentage with a mark of .3683 (330 CS's out of 896 SB Attempts against him). LaValliere ranks 32nd all-time amongst catchers for throwing out would-be base stealers some 17.94% above the league average. His best years were 1986 (STL-N) and 1987 (PIT-N) when he threw out 41.0% and 45.2% respectively. Those seasons rank Mike 254th (1987) and 478th (1986) all-time of the 5,000+ catcher seasons recorded.
