Scouting Report
1999 Season
Coming off a 1998 minor league season that established him as one of the better catching prospects in baseball, Mitch Meluskey was expected to challenge for at least a platoon role with Houston. Then he injured his shoulder late in spring training and had season-ending surgery after playing in just 10 games.
Hitting, Baserunning & Defense
Meluskey's forte is his hitting ability. A switch-hitter with above-average bat speed and exacting patience from both sides of the plate, he has the strength to hit 15-20 home runs in the big leagues. Meluskey has average receiving and throwing skills, but he's still raw in terms of calling games. He's a below-average runner but doesn't clog the bases.
2000 Outlook
Meluskey was back to regular baseball activities by October and, barring any setbacks, should be fully healthy for spring training. He should be able to seize the starting job, and expect strong offensive numbers if he does so.
