San Francisco's number-one pick in the June 1967 draft (18th overall), Rader was The Sporting News NL Rookie
Player of the Year in 1972, when he caught 127 games and batted .259. After five years as the Giants ' first-string
catcher (1972-76), he spent each of the following four seasons with a different team.
He was the Cubs' regular catcher in 1978, though he hit just .203. His best year batting was in 1975 when he had an OPS (On-Base
Pct + Slugging) of .754 and a batting average of .291.
