A solid backup to Charles Johnson and Ivan Rodriguez, Mike is a fine defensive catcher who provides some pretty good pop off the bench. Just ask Atlanta Braves pitcher Tom Glavine. Mike has been Glavine's personal nemesis, entering 2002 with a lifetime batting average of .600 (18-for-30) against the future Hall of Famer. Mike hits all lefties well -- he registered a .375 mark against them in 2001 -- but is also known for his ability to work with young pitchers and throw out runners. He recorded a .994 fielding percentage last season (two errors in 314 chances) and gunned down 38.9 percent of would-be basestealers (14 of 36).

Mike hit .305 in 2002 -- his fourth .300 season in five years. In 2001 he delivered four home runs and 14 RBI in 48 games. He also hit his first career inside-the-park home run, becoming the first major-league catcher to do that since Minnesota's Chad Moeller in 2000. Mike played at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash. and studied public relations and sociology in college and is one of the more articulate spokesmen in the Marlins' clubhouse.
