The younger brother of Boss Schmidt, who caught for Detroit from 1906 through 1911, Walter was a light-hitting, platooned Pirate catcher for nine seasons and finished his career with St. Louis in 1925. He had to buy his release from San Francisco (Pacific Coast League) to sign with Pittsburgh. In 1921 Walter led all National League catchers in Fielding Percentage with a .986 average in his 111 games behind the plate.
