Dodger Vice President Al Campanis called Scioscia the best plate-blocking catcher he had seen in 46 years of baseball. In July 1985, the fearless Scioscia was knocked unconscious in a collision with the Cardinals' Jack Clark, but held on to the ball. With a good eye at the plate, he finished second in the National League in on-base percentage in 1985, batting .296. He missed most of 1983 after tearing his rotator cuff throwing out Padres speedster Alan Wiggins. Scioscia hit a game-tying, ninth-inning homer off Dwight Gooden in Game Four of the 1988 LCS as the Dodgers won in the 12th.

Mike Scioscia belongs to a very exclusive club having won the World Series as a Player (1988) and as a Manager (2002).
