Kelly joined his fourth major-league team when he signed with the Reds at the conclusion of 2000. Brought in to back up Jason LaRue, he's an excellent defensive catcher with quick reactions and a powerful throwing arm. Kelly also has pretty good power at the plate. Despite being bothered by a sore elbow for most of 2001, he hit nine homers, drove in 25 runs and batted .257 in 63 games. Two of those homers came in the same June win over the Chicago Cubs.
Kelly grew up in Oklahoma where he was named All-State in both baseball and football (quarterback). Originally signed by the Cleveland Indians, he made his major-league debut with the New York Mets in 1994 after being chosen in the Rule 5 Draft. Kelly spent two seasons with the Mets and two more with the Milwaukee Brewers (1996-97) before moving on to the Arizona Diamondbacks (1998-2000). In 1998, he hit 11 homers in 92 games before belting a career-high 14 in 88 contests the following season. Kelly threw out 27.6 percent of would-be basestealers (58 of 210) during his three years in Arizona. Kelly was traded from the Reds to the Phillies in late 2003.
