TEAM NAME Texas Rangers Milwaukee Brewers Kansas City Royals Chicago Cubs |
LEAGUE NAME American League American League American League National League |
After only one year of minor league seasoning, Jim Sundberg was ready for a
full-time life in the majors.
Sundberg became the Rangers' regular catcher after a single season of AA ball, batting
.298 and demonstrating great defensive skills. For a decade he averaged 140 games
per season behind the plate. In his second big league season, he tied the AL record
for games caught with 155. Seven times he led AL receivers in fielding average, and
he led in putouts and assists six times each. He was also deadly at gunning down
would-be basestealers, nailing as many as 50% in a season. Sundberg was the only
catcher to be awarded six Gold Gloves, and on his retirement in 1989 was in third
place for career games caught.
Sundberg holds the major league record for catching 90% of his team's games in 6 seasons. He also is tied for 2nd place
for catching 75% of his team's games in 11 seasons. His 155 games caught in 1975 puts him in 2nd place all-time for the
most games caught in a season (tying Ray Mueller and Frankie Hayes). Sundberg ranks 7th all-time with 71.48% career games
caught of his team's games.
