A journeyman catcher who has played for half of the NL clubs in his 12 ML seasons, Trevino was discovered by the Mets while playing in the Mexican Central League. He hit a career-high .271 in 1979, his first full ML season, while splitting time behind the plate and at third base, and he has filled in around the infield throughout his career. He was one of three players the Mets sent to Cincinnati in exchange for George Foster in 1982 and was the Reds' regular catcher that year, hitting .251 in 120 games. He lacked power, however, and was sold to the Braves, then traded in rapid succession to the Giants and Dodgers, who released him before the 1988 season. Trevino then signed as a free agent with Tucson (Pacific Coast League) and was promoted to the Astros after only 15 games.
