Unusual songs Elvis did on stage, 1969-77

...by Shane Paterson

May 17, 1996

What I mean by "unusual" is that either these songs were only performed once, or on a very few occasions (most of which were no more than one-liners), or that they were not typically part of Elvis' repertoire at the time he performed them. An example of the latter is "I Can't Stop Loving You" from his final concert in 1977 which, though he performed it hundreds of times between 1969 and 1973, had been dropped from his line-up for a few years by the time Elvis set foot on that stage in Indianapolis.

OS = opening show
DS = dinner show
MS = midnight show
CS = closing show
3AM = special 3 AM show AFT = afternoon show (on tour)
EVE = evening show (on tour)

I can't vouch for the validity of some of these songs, nor be certain that the wrong dates have been ascribed in some instances. I would greatly appreciate receiving any additional information which might be added to this list.

In light of a recent development, I'll gladly credit your contribution (unless you don't want visits from the black helicopters of Elvis' Estate, wondering how you got hold of such information) for electronic posterity, fleeting as it may often be. One person wrote to me insisting that I credit him for information he perceived to have been taken from his web pages, where he has a listing of tapes for sale or trade that includes "highlight" songs alledgedly on each tape. Unlike for my biological research, I haven't been so rigorous with this kind of digging that I've taken care to attribute each new tidbit of information to a specific source, but I'll turn over a new leaf, and step up to a higher level of rigor in my Elvisology, and acknowledge his input: some of the material herein derives from Merijn van der Meer (thanks). It's actually difficult for me to pick out exactly what his relatively recent contribution was -- most of what follows has been extracted from my own painstaking research over almost two decades (which, as well as including plenty of time looking at microfiche newspapers, has also involved buying and trading for a great many tapes recorded from the audience at Elvis' concerts), and I can't even remember the myriad of sources that did provide information along the way. A fair bit of my old information came from various "catalogs" of concert tapes for sale, etc -- however, it seemed like most of the people who knew of these performances wanted, perversely, to keep them "secret, " making compilation of this list extremely slow. At its most extreme, this terrible attitude extended to cutting out rarities from live tapes that are traded or sold! Lesser sins, but almost as irking, have included rearranging track listings to create a "new" concert and, of course, deliberate or unintentional liberties with the date of each tape.

One caution: Merijn caught on to my fiendish plot when he noticed an error here that matched one on his tape lists...further, I know for a fact that some of the songs (usually very brief snippets by Elvis) claimed for certain concerts are incorrectly titled, including those provided by Merijn's pages. Part of the problem may be that Elvis would throw out fragments of extremely obscure songs that most of us have never heard before, though I found one of Merijn's errors (not sure if it's the one he referred to as an indicator of me using his list as a reference) when I bought a 1976 Tahoe tape from and heard "Delilah" where Merijn heard "I Saw The Light". Thusly are errors propagated, so please bear that in mind as you peruse what's below. Actually, some of the stuff below may well fit in better on my page of rumored material because I'm finding it increasingly hard to take on faith some of the songs attributed to Elvis at particular concerts -- unfortunately, I don't have time to sort out the few questionable ones right now, though.

Further information has recently come from Haruo Hirose's excellent web pages, which I wish had existed when I first began searching for live rarities...I've also recently added information derived from "The Elvis Tapes," David Wilson's very informative web pages, as well as some from "Elvis Presley In Concert," another great site. It's worth mentioning that many of the listings of songs ascribed to certain dates conflict between these pages and between them and the information I previously gathered myself, so please take some of the dates below as perhaps being open to question...

P.S.: I have not sold, I do not sell, and I will not sell Elvis tapes...

NOTE: I've linked some RealAudio songs and photographs to the text below -- credit goes to the following for these sources (please let me know if I've inadvertantly left someone out due to my less-than-systematic approach to updating pages):
