BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Since its beginning 50 years ago as a small expatriate school founded by two members of the expatriate community in Kuching, namely Mrs Mary Haworth (wife of the Medical and Health Superintendent) and Mrs Edith Milton (wife of the Director of Civil Aviation), Lodge School has undergone many changes.  Not only have we moved location 3 times to accommodate the ever expanding school, but we have gone from a small expatriate school using the British Curriculum to a large institution consisting of four separate schools; The International School, National Secondary, National Primary and the Kindergarten.  In 1983 The Ministry of Education Malaysia required all Malaysian Students to follow the Malaysian national Education policy which uses Bahasa Malaysia as the medium of instruction.  As a result of this the National School was formed.  However the two schools were housed in the one building and the English classes were formed from combined classes from both schools. By 1994 the school was so large that it now occupied two campuses.  Senior School at Tabuan Desa and the Junior School at Tabuan Jaya, and the International School was no longer following the British curriculum but an amalgamation of the best features of the British, Singaporean and Malaysian curricula because of the combined English classes.

In 2001 the International School again adopted a wholly British curriculum and in 2002 was moved to the Tabuan Jaya site. The entire National School now resides at the Tabuan Desa site.  In line with our adoption of the British Curriculum, Lodge School became an accredited Cambridge examination centre and now offers two sets of International examinations; the Cambridge Checkpoint exams which provide evaluation at the age of 14 and the International GCSE exams (IGCSE) which are taken at age 16.  Our first group of students successfully completed the IGCSE courses in November 2002. The exam results were impressive with a few students obtaining 6 A's or higher.  As we move on to our next 50 years it is to be hoped that our students and staff will maintain the high standards that have become a hallmark of both the National and International Schools.  We are also fortunate to be part of a large school and yet to retain our own distinct identity.  We have the luxury of small classes and individual attention to students and yet access to all the resources of a large school.

PARENT INVOLVEMENT

Lodge International School encourages parents to take an active role in their child’s education. Parent teacher interviews are held twice a year and parents are encouraged to come forward at any time during the school year if they are concerned about their child. We do however prefer parents to make appointments through the office with the respective teachers so as not to disrupt classes.

Each class has a parent as class representative who is there to be of help to the other parents, especially the new parents.  They are a resource who can be called upon to help out with the day to day problems encountered by families new to the school.  We also have parents within the different cultural groups who have offered to be of help to new parents.

The International School has a Sub Committee, distinct from the School Board but reporting to it, made up of school parents.  The meetings are held regularly and notice of each meeting is posted on the bulletin board in the school foyer.  The meetings are NOT closed and parents are encouraged to attend.

At the beginning of the school year the committee hosts a Saturday coffee morning in the school, this is mainly for the new families but all families are encouraged to attend and it is a way for the parents to become familiar with the school and to meet the staff and other parents.  Other school based coffee mornings are held throughout the year but the frequency is dependent upon how many school functions there are in any particular year.  This year, 2003, is our 50th anniversary and so is going to be quite busy and therefore the number of school based coffee mornings held this year will be fewer However the parents of the school also often hold coffee mornings or evening suppers for the other parents to attend as a social event.  We find that these gatherings are a great way for people to meet and exchange views on the school.  Many valuable suggestions have come from these events, and we encourage parents to hold them.

COMMUNICATION BETWEEN SCHOOL AND HOME

At the beginning of every school year each child is given a school diary.  For day to day matters this diary is the main line of communication between teacher and parent. It is important therefore that the contact phone numbers are kept up to date in case parents need to be contacted urgently.  Parents are strongly encouraged to check the school diary daily to keep themselves informed of their child’s homework and progress.  Teachers may also send home notes to the parents written in the diary and parents are encouraged to use the diary in a similar fashion.  It is hoped that this will help to settle potential problems quickly; however parents are welcome to call the school or to see the teacher concerned.  The school secretary will be happy to arrange this for you.

Parent teacher interviews are also held twice a year after the first and third report cards have been issued. They run for two days, the first day being for teacher requested interviews and the second day for parent requested interviews.  The Parent Teacher interview days are marked on the school calendar which is found within the school diary.

Parents are asked to keep the school informed of any changes to the home situation that may affect the students schooling in any way.  For instance, if the child is to be picked up by someone other than the parent the school needs to be notified.  Also it is important that the contact phone numbers supplied to the school be kept up to date.  In case of emergency it is vital that the school has the correct contact information.  So again in the situation where the child is going to be staying with someone other than the parent the new contact information needs to be given to the school.

DAY TO DAY INFORMATION

MEDICAL SERVICES

The school has a sick room that is well equipped for minor medical problems.  However in case of a more serious medical condition or emergency parents will be notified as the school is not equipped for this type of situation.  It is of utmost importance therefore that the contact phone numbers given to the school are kept up to date.

It is also important that children suffering from a communicable disease such as measles or influenza are kept at home until they are well.

CATERING SERVICES

Although many parents pack a lunch for their children or bring lunch to the school the International School does have its own canteen that offers meals Monday to Friday and also has many food and drink  items for sale at break and after school.

The menu is broad and varied with emphasis on delivering healthy nutritious meals.  Meals are usually ordered a week ahead using the form obtained from the canteen.

LOST PROPERTY

All clothing and children’s property brought to school should be named and can then be returned to the student if found.  However all unnamed lost property is kept in the office in the lost property box.

PARKING AND COLLECTING STUDENTS

Parents are asked to co-operate fully with the jaga when parking/ picking up their child from school.  Please do not park along the street as it causes severe traffic problems to the residents and the other parents.  All cars should display the school sticker on the front windshield.  These are available from the National School office.

VISITORS

All visitors and parents must report to the office to sign in and collect a visitors pass.  Parent security passes may be obtained from the National School office and must be worn if parents are to enter the school buildings.

STUDENTS LEAVING THE CAMPUS

Students who need to leave the school before the end of the school day must have a letter from their parents/guardian.  Also students who are to be picked up by someone other than their parents/driver must have notified the school before hand.

ATTENDANCE

Parents must provide the class teacher with a written explanation for their child’s absence from school.  Parents are asked to ensure that family holiday arrangements coincide with the school holidays and therefore minimise the disruption to their child’s education.

If in emergencies parents find that they have to leave their children in the care of others, they must inform the school immediately of the adult who will be looking after their children and provide all necessary contact phone numbers.
