A Matter of Trust
1994
paper on fiberglass with cotton thread
72 x 72 x 1/8 in.
Smithsonian American Art Museum, Gift of the artist

Paper envelopes stitched between layers of fiberglass window screen form the blocks of this unusual quilt. Each envelope contains a personal secret written by a friend or member of the artist's family and entrusted to her care. Castagliola, who immigrated to the United States from Cuba in 1961, considered collecting the secrets a test of her own integrity: "The piece is not so much about secrets as about intimacy and trust," she has said.
