Smithsonian American Art Museum, Museum purchase made possibly by the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation

Montoya says that her challenge as an artist is to discover her identity and to articulate the experience of Chicanos in the United States. Her images, often of women and children, come from Hispanic culture. She examines, she says, the icons that express her spiritual, political, emotional, and cultural views of the world.
