In 1984, having earned an engineering degree, Trujillo was ready for a high-tech career far from the New Mexico farm where he was raised. But as the seventh-generation in a family who had been weavers for centuries, Trujillo also dreamed of weaving some day. He soon gave up engineering to work full time in the family's artform. Combining his father's traditional approach with his own technical training, he explored complex designs. "I try," he remarked, "to capture the spirit of the old pieces while also expressing my own experience in the contemporary world."

En 1984, tras haber obtenido el título de ingeniero, Trujillo se disponía a ejercer una carrera técnica lejos de la granja de Nuevo México donde se había criado. Pero como vástago de una familia en la que le habían precedido seis generaciones de tejedores, también soñaba con tejer algún día. Pronto renunció a la ingeniería para dedicarse por entero a la actividad artística de la familia. La combinación del método tradicional de su padre con sus propios conocimientos técnicos le permitió experimentar con intrincados diseños.
