Related to a long-standing tradition of New Mexico carvings, this sculpture is remarkable for its pathos. The elongated limbs, emaciated torso, and sunken chest emphasize the suffering of the crucified Christ. A similar crucifixion, probably by the same artist, is still venerated in a chapel in Cubero, New Mexico.
