Source # 26: Plutarch

Caesar was often misunderstood and this is part of the reason why he was killed. He did not want to become king as bad as people thought that he did. He much more wanted to be good for the people and do the right things for them. Maybe by refusing the crown he showed the conspirators that he was working with the people to make them like him even more. But the common crowd would think nothing of the fact that he would not except the crown. They cheered for him because he did not want it, they respected him for it even more. The common people in the play loved Caesar and thought that he was the greatest, it was only the conspirators that truly doubted him. If Caesar wanted so badly to be the king than why when he was given the chance did he not accept. The conspirators did disguise there feeling but the reason why they openly came out and did something about them was not because they knew that the people were on there side. The people had respect for Caesar and this was never flawed throughout the play, they wanted him to be there leader and even if all he wanted was to be that, they did not care. I think that the conspirators were the ones that wanted to think that Caesar was not liked by the people, this is what gave them reason to do what they did.
