Tackle Tips & Facts:
Sheepshead move into the rivers to spawn in February.
Sheepshead are fond of pilings, where they eat the barnacles and
shrimp. Some anglers will use a rake to knock the barnacles off the
pilings as chum, then fish with a live shrimp fiddler crab or sand flea.
Sheepshead are champion bait stealers, so most anglers use small
hooks that will catch the fish in the lips or roof of the mouth. The
standard sheepshead rig consists of a No. 6 wire hok tied on a
dropper loop, with a 1-ounce weight at the bottom. Schools of
sheepshead travel together on the flats, where they can be sight
casted using a small live shrimp. Sheepshead are excellent table
fare.
