Black Ghost Knife Fish:
LATIN NAME:
   Apteronotus albifrons

pH:
   6.6

WATER TEMP:
   74-80 deg. F.

AVG. MAX. SIZE:
   21+ inches /  48 cm.

MINIMUM RECOMMENDED TANK SIZE:
Do not place in tanks smaller than 25 gallons, 40+ gallons is preferred.

BREEDING:
   Egg-layers

FEEDING:
   Mainly Live/Frozen worms.

NOTE:
These are really cool!, but take a lot of care.  Can be trained over a long period of time to become gentle enough to be hand fed, Click to see the related article.

LIGHTING:
More nocturnal, prefers dusk and dawn, light lighting, a good trick is to have a red filtered lamp that you can turn on during late night feedings, this way you will be able to watch more of the knife fish's movements.

TEMPERAMENT:
Peaceful, very good community fish. Somewhat territorial. Emits an electric shock to any fish that care to try and nibble on its tail.

COMMENTS:

A scaleless electric fish. Can be trained to lay in its owners hand and be fed, Click Here to see the  article on how to do that. Needs a cave and vegetation in which to hide or dense plantings. I do not recommend the all clear plastic tubes as these do not provide them any protection from the light. Rockeries and hollow logs are best.

Can grow extremely large in the right environment. Be aware there are other strains of Knife fish that can get very nasty and end up devouring almost every other fish in the tank! i.e. Clown Knives and African Knife Fish.

CAUTION!!! Do not keep more than one of these in a tank at any one time, also do not mix with other electric fishes such as Elephant Noses. Their ability to emit a small electrical field aids these nearly blind fish in hunting for food, but can get confused if another electric generating fish is in the same tank. These fields are not used to stun the prey, but like sonar it aids in navigation, much like a bat uses it's radar.

Since this is a scaleless fish standard fish treatments for illness may not work and cause death of the Black Ghost Knife Fish.
