Villány is a historical wine region, which has been proving its good quality for centuries. The hill around Villány belongs to the village. Having favorable natural endowment, the place is suitable for growing red grape, of which special quality wine is made. Because of the excellent natural endowment this area is appropriate for making pleasant semi-dry wine rich in acid and aroma. Besides the good dietary effects red wine is important to keep health.

The Szauer family has been growing vine in Villány for 300 years. The tradition of vine-growing, the love of the wine and the expertise have been passed on generation from father to son. The full satisfaction of the customers’ demands and assuring the usual quality made it possible to live on.

The Szauer family

The Szauer family lived in Villány many centuries ago and worked in the agriculture and grew vine. At the end of the last century, when the proprietorship register first turned up, then the current territories had already been the part of the family’s lands. The house that is on the estate was built by my grand-grandfather, Mihály Szauer in 1920. After the 2nd World War my grandparents made their whole living from wine. The vineyard in Villány also helped my parents’ living on a large scale. The wine was first put into circulation in 1982 in Hungary, when our wine was first bottled under the name of my grandmother (Szauer Györgyné).

I feel that it is my duty to follow the tradition of wine and agriculture that my ancestors established. We take it with pleasure. I am qualified as an agriculture engineer, which helps me to apply the newest techniques of vine-growing based on the traditions of my ancestors. In 1989 new types of grape was planted: Oporto, Zweigelt, Kékfrankos and Blauburger. So we have these kinds of wine both rosé and red wine.

The different kinds of wine in Villány have pleasant acid, semi-dry character, which is quite rich in flavor and aroma. The rich color makes the Villány wine attractive.
