The Brownies:

Their Site

B R O W N I E S ,

like fairies and goblins, are imaginary little sprites, who are supposed to delight in harmless pranks and helpful deeds. They work and sport while weary households sleep, and never allow themselves to be seen by mortal eyes.

Created by illustrator Palmer Cox for the pages of ST. NICHOLAS magazine, The Prownies first appeared in their own book in 1887. Cox drew incredibly intricate pictures of his playful Brownies, often with hundreds of brownies on every page. Amazingly, each brownie character was unique and possessed its own personality. The internet is not a good showplace for Palmer's work, for it doesn't allow the sort of detail that he put into his illustrations. But we hope that this site will prompt you to track down his work in books, magazines and collectibles, so you can see for yourself the wonderful humor and astonishing detail of the Brownie's world...
