“Hey Tay.”
“So what’d Dr. Michael’s say?”
“Um, Tay are you sitting down?”
“Sure am, but can it be that bad?”
“Tay, I have cancer.”
I hadn’t wanted it to be true, although I had know what it really was all along. I had read everything I could get my hands on about cancer since Jane’s death. Taylor had too. I mean she was his grandmother.
Oh, he was scared.
Leukemia.
Oh.
Neither one of us said anything for about ten minutes.
“Um, Maddie, I have to go now, he was lying through his teeth.

I was checked into the hospital the next morning. Ike, Tay, and Zac were there because it was my birthday, December 31st. I am turning 11 today, but Tay won’t till March 14th.
They tried to make me feel better about going in on my birthday but it didn’t work.
“Isaac?” It was now a month after I had been checked in and started on my medication, and two days after Taylor had stopped talking to me.
“Yes Maddie?”
“Why did Tay stop talking to me?”
“I don’t know, he’s being asinine.”
“Is he scared?”
“Yes, I think so.”
“Oh.”
“Jordan Taylor Hanson! You are such a spoiled brat!” I yelled at Tay, after getting home from the hospital.
“What’d I do?!” He screamed back.
“What’d you do?! What’d YOU do?!! No it’s more like, what’d SHE do!”
“What are you talking about?! Are you crazy? She didn’t do anything, that’s the problem!”
“How can she?! She is in a hospital for heavens sake! Why won’t you talk to her? You’re her friend!!!!!! Or so I thought.”
“Shut up Isaac! You don’t know!! It’s none of your business!”
“Oh yes it is!”
“Not!”
“Hey guys! I am trying to SLEEP!!”
“Ike it’s been a month and two weeks since Tay stopped talking, but two weeks ago he stopped coming to see her.”
“What an ass.”
“Isaac! Don’t talk like that!”
“Sorry mom!”
“Why is he doing that to her?”
“I don’t know. Just leave him be.”
“Ok, whatever you say.”
*RING*
“Hello?”
“Jordan Taylor Hanson, why are you being so rude? Why won’t you visit me? Or when you do you don’t talk to me? What in heavens name did I do to you? I thought we were friends!!”
"I have to go.”
“Oh no you don’t! You can’t just all of the sudden shut out your friends, or your brothers. Don’t think just because I’m not there that I don’t know what’s going on! I’m your friend!”
“Bye.”
*CLICK*
“Turd!!!”
“Maddie?”
“Yes?”
“Here is everything I have ever borrowed from you, everything you have ever given me. I am NOT your friend, and you are NOT mine.”
With that he left. I cried.
