Chapter 5

Marisa moved into Kevin's house in Orlando two days later. She had been there almost a week when the day arrived. She was going to get her ring; she just didn't know it.  He wanted it to be a total surprise.

"Honey, I'm going to the mall with Brian." Marisa yelled to Kevin. He was in the bathroom.

"Why?" He said as he walked out, with the toothbrush still in his mouth.

"He needs help."

"We all know that." Kevin said with a smile.

"He wants to buy Nicky a present. He wants me to help pick it out."

"Are those two dating?"

"No. He wants to use the gift as a way of asking. I don't understand what he is so worried about. She will say yes."

"Ok. Maybe I'll see you there later."

"Huh?"

"Never mind.  I think I'll just stay here.

"Ok" she said as she walked over to him. He wrapped her in his arms.

"I love you." He whispered

"I love you too." He leaned for a kiss and they began to kiss intensely.

He was remembering that morning. Then suddenly Kevin was ripped from those happy memories.

"I knew it was too good. Nothing had went wrong yet." Kevin muttered under his breath.

"What? Why did you stop?"

Kevin reached into his pocket.

"I saw you two at the mall, but I avoided you." As he said this he pulled and pulled out a box.

"The ring. It came in?"

"Yeah," Kevin said as he took it out of its box, "Look at it" He handed it to Brian. It wasn't a big diamond, but he knew that was the way Marisa wanted it.

The diamond didn't matter. It was the way the ring was designed. It's almost indescribable. It was unique, like nothing Brian had ever seen. On the inside of the band it had Kevin and Marisa's names engraved. Next to the names was the word forever.

"Wow. It must have been expensive." Brian said as he handed it back to Kevin.

"That doesn't matter. Money doesn't matter. All that matters is that she is ok."

"It will all be ok."

"I can't lose her, she has to be ok."

Just as he said that the doctor walked out. Kevin was taken over by an overwhelming sense of fear. Brian could see it in Kevin's eyes.

"Mr. Richardson can we."

"Just tell me right here."

"The surgery was a success, but your fiancée is in a coma."

"Will she wake up? Will she be ok?"

"It could go either way at this point. We don't know if there will be any long term effects either."

"I just want to know if she is going to wake up."

"We won't know that for awhile. Her pupils are reacting to light and that's a good sign. Beyond that, we won't know anything until she wakes up."

"If she wakes up."

"I know I haven't given you a lot of reassurance. The best advice I can give you is to pray and hope for the best."

"I know. Thanks. Um.when can I see her?"

"I'll come and get you once she is in her room."

He and Brian sat back down in the waiting room. They were totally silent. Kevin couldn't stand it.

"Brian, where is Nicky?"

"While you were talking I called her. She said she would call everyone else who needed to know. Then she will be here."

"What happened Brian?" Kevin asked out of leftfield. However, Brian knew just what he was asking.

"She went through the windshield. She flew a few feet. When she hit the pavement she kind of slid and she just stopped."

"The windshield? You couldn't wake her up?"

"Well.I just didn't want to upset you."

"What? Was she awake? Did she say something?"

"Yeah. I didn't want to upset you."

"Tell me Brian."

"She kept telling me how much she loved you. She was asking me to tell you how much she loved you and how sorry she was because." Brian stopped. He was trying not to cry.

"Why was she sorry Brian?"

"Because. She said she was sorry that wasn't going to get to marry you." Brian looked at Kevin. Kevin's face was blank. It was like he had just saw a ghost.

"I told her she was wrong and that she would be fine."

"She will be. She has to be. We were talking this morning. We decided to get married on my birthday. Actually she decided. We don't want anything fancy, just a small ceremony away from the fans and everything. We were.are going to move to Kentucky and have tons of kids. We'll own horses and everything. You don't make those kind of plans unless your gonna fulfill them. She has to be ok." Kevin said as he broke down. He held his head in his hands and sobbed. After a few minutes he composed himself, as usual trying hard not to show too much of his emotion.  Finally the doctor took him to her. He walked into the room and stopped in the doorway. Marisa was hooked up to all kinds of machines. He slowly walked over to her. He leaned over and kissed her on the forehead.

"I love you." He whispered.  He grabbed her left hand.

"I got the ring today. I was gonna do this tonite, but the sooner the better right?" he placed the ring on her finger.

"This year I will have the best birthday ever. Forever, baby. We will be together."
