Carolyn Rose

Up the stairs in the hall
An  old oval shape picture hung on the wall
"Who's that little girl setting in that chair"
"Why is her picture hanging there?"

"Carolyn Rose is her name" mom would say
"My little sister that pass away"
"Mommy she is so young why did she die"
"She had Scarlet fever" was her reply

"That must have made Grandma and Grandpa sad"
"Oh yes! It made us all feel very bad"
Mom then would show me a lock of hair tied in blue
"Sometimes when I think of her, I think of you"

"Why we are not a thing alike"
Her hair hung in curls oh so tight
"Sometimes when I see you in play"
"Please keep my daughter safe I pray"

"She too was a happy child"
"That would light a room with her smile"
"Then angles came and took her away"
"I know she went to heaven that very day"

Then I would see a tear in mom's eye
Knowing that my questions made her cry
With her grandparents, in Gods keep
Carolyn Rose lay fast asleep

The photograph

When Carolyn Rose past away back in 1925 it was discovered that the family did not even, have a good picture of the child. That was until about three years later when walking past a picture studio Lois stopped to admire the photos on display in the window. Was she ever surprised to see a photograph of her little sister among the ones being displayed. She entered the store to make sure that her eyes were not deceiving her. When she inquired, she learned that the photographer would travel neighbor hood to neighbor hood taking pictures.   Then he would try to sell them to the parents if he could, but times were hard and people just could not always afford to buy. Those were the pictures that he used for display showing the quality and different poses that he would use.
Lois remembered the day he came by the house, and how she begged her mother please have Carolyns picture made.  Mayme knew he just wanted to make a sale and there would be no way she could afford to pay.  The photographer said he understood but he would still like to photograph her if he could.  Mayme felt that it would just be a waste of time but Lois insisted that they should have her little sisters picture made. After Lois said that she would be the one to comb her hair and wash her face. Her mother gave in but she went back to doing the family wash. Lois got Carolyn ready and had the picture made.
If the photographer ever came back, it had to have been while Lois was in school.   She never saw the pictures made that day .It was only when passing the shop three or four years later that she saw it setting in the window. When she explained to the photographer that her sister had died from Scarlet Fever and that they had no pictures, he was happy to let her buy the picture at a very small price
