Soul Asylum Debuts New Drummer In Surprise Show
It seems that anything can happen on a moment's notice at
Minneapolis's 400 Bar -- like Soul Asylum walking in a little before midnight and telling owner Bill Sullivan that they want to play a last-minute set with their new drummer (bar closing time is 1 a.m. in Minnesota). That's exactly how the band chose to introduce Charlie Quintana, their new man behind the kit, to their hometown crowd Tuesday
(March 3) night.

Quintana, who fills the slot left open last year by the departure of Sterling Campbell, is the former skin- pounder for the late-'70s punk outfit the Plugz, and has more recently been found playing with the likes of Izzy Stradlin and the Ju Ju Hounds, the John Doe Thing,
Cracker, and Mecca Normal. He becomes the band's fourth drummer since the release of their debut album, Say What You Will, Clarence..., in 1984 (following Pat Morley, Grant Young and Campbell).
The band's forthcoming release, Candy from a Stranger, which was recorded with Campbell, is scheduled for a May 12 release on Columbia.
