Debuts New Drummer In Surprise Show
- It seems that
anything can happen on a moment's notice at
- Minneapolis's 400
Bar -- like Soul Asylum walking in a little before midnight and telling
owner Bill Sullivan that they want to play a last-minute set with their
new drummer (bar closing time is 1 a.m. in Minnesota). That's exactly how
the band chose to introduce Charlie Quintana, their new man behind the
kit, to their hometown crowd Tuesday
- (March 3) night.
-
- Quintana, who
fills the slot left open last year by the departure of Sterling Campbell,
is the former skin- pounder for the late-'70s punk outfit the Plugz, and
has more recently been found playing with the likes of Izzy Stradlin and
the Ju Ju Hounds, the John Doe Thing,
- Cracker, and
Mecca Normal. He becomes the band's fourth drummer since the release of
their debut album, Say What You Will, Clarence..., in 1984 (following Pat
Morley, Grant Young and Campbell).
- The band's
forthcoming release, Candy from a Stranger, which was recorded with
Campbell, is scheduled for a May 12 release on Columbia.
