83rd Infantry Division - originally formed during WW1 was reactivated in mid-1942, with the first contingent of troops arriving at the Camp on July 16th, 1942. The 83rd Division included the 329th, 330th, and 331st Infantry Regiments, the 322nd, 323rd, 324th and 908th Field Artillery Battalions; the 308th Medical Battalion, the 308th Engineers and the Headquarters, Signal, Quartermaster and Ordnance Companies. A school was set up for Rangers in March 1943. The 83rd left the Camp on June 14th, 1943. In April 1944, they sailed for England. Among other impressive achievements, the 83rd was instrumental in capturing the Hamm railyards, and then proceeded to the Elbe, capturing 24,000 Germans and liberating 75,000 Allied prisoners on the way. |

92nd Army Division - was trained at the Camp at the same time as the 83rd. The 92nd included the 365th Infantry Regiment and the 597th Field Artillery Battalion, composed of Negro selective servicemen. The 365th and 597th trained until April 26th, 1943 when they joined the rest of the Division. They seized Mount Cassela in Italy, a peak dominating the coastal ports. |
30th Infantry Division - arrived at Atterbury November 13th, 1943. It consisted of National Guard troops from Tennessee, North and South Carolina and selective service troops from Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota and North Dakota. It was called the "Old Hickory Division" and was one of the first four units to be reactivated for WW2. It was composed of the 117th, 119th and 120th Infantry Regiments; the 113th, 118th, 197th and the 230th Field Artillery Battalions, the 730th Ordnance Light Maintenance Company, the 105th Medical Battalion and the 105th Engineer Battalion, Signal and Quartermaster Companies, Reconnaissance Troops and a Division Headquarters and Headquarters Company. They served in the fighting in Normandy, France, Belgium and Holland. |
106th Infantry Division - arrived on May 15th, 1943 and included the 422d, 423rd and the 424th Infantry Regiments, the 589th, 590th, 591st, and 592nd Field Artillery Regiments. The 106th was known as the "Golden Lion" Division. It was the last large divisional unit to train at Camp Atterbury. The 106th, assigned to aquiet" sector in St. Vith, France, on December 16th, caught the worst of the Battle of the Buldge offensive by the Germans. Although greatly outnumbered, with the 101st Airborne Division, held out for more than a week until relieved by General George S. Patton's tank corps. They took 1/5th of all casualties of the battle which numbered, 8,663, including 416 dead, 1,246 wounded and 7,001 missing, which were held prisoners by the Germans. See Camp Atterbury Museum for a diary kept by a 106th member during the Battle of the Bulge and capture by the Germans. Camp Crier Secretary of War Stimson, lauding "the gallant stand" made by the 106th Division in the Ardennes yesterday said it suffered 8,663 casualties, 416 killed, 1,246 wounded and 7,001 missing. "It was the contribution of the men of this division and of others less heavily hit....which helped make possible the halting and repelling of the enemy," Secretary Stimson said. Recent reports from front correspondents have listed the now famous "Lion" division as still fighting. Yesterday British Prime Minister Churchill said that the Ardennes battle had been turned into "an ever famous American victory and is more likely to shorten this war than lengthen it."The 106th Division trained at Atterbury from March until October of last year. Our other two divisions, the 83rd and 30th are fighting heroically and also helped stop the Nazi offensive. |
31st "Dixie" Division - Not trained at Atterbury, but assigned there after the war, consisted of the 154th, 155th, 167th and the 124th Infantry Regiments and the 114th, 116th, 117th and 149th Field Artillery Battalions. Supporting units included the 106th Engineer Combat Battalions, the 31st Calvary Recon Troop, 731st Ordnance Company, 31st Signal Company, Division Headquarters Company, Military Police Platoon and the Division Band. |
Austrian Battalion (101st Atterbury Infantry Battalion) - was part o the regular United States Army which also contained one Czech Battalion and one Norwegian Battalion. Qualifications for this battalion included knowledge of the German language, Austrian parentage. Most were political refugees from the Austrian Republic. After 3 months of service they were given the opportunity to become American citizens. |
Korean War 28th Division - Known as the "Keystone Division" is the oldest component of the United States Army that has a continuous service record. It became know as the "Bloody Bucket" Division in reference to the flaming red Keystone shoulder patch. In August 1950, they were again called to service and sent to the newly reopened Camp on September 14th, 1950, in a convoy of 450 vehicles. Mr. Hilton U. Brown, an Indianapolis news reporter made the following statement: "Surely there is enough righteousness in sober, thoughtful free men to conquer evil and to bring back peace to the world - if not, may God have mercy on any who comes up against the 28th Division." |
