How the digestive system works

Here I will take you through the steps of the digestive system.
1. ingestion- the food enters your mouth.
2. digestion- after you chew the food, it enters the esophagus. The esophagus pushes the food down from your mouth to your stomach in about four to ten seconds. Once in your stomach, the food gets mixed with digestive juices that help break down the food into chyme. After going through the stomach, the food moves on to the small intestines where more digestive juices from the liver and pancreas are added to the mixture.
3. absorption- after all this, the chyme is pretty much just a soup of molecules. The chyme is now ready to be absorbed by villi on the wall of the small intestine. The nutrients are absorbed out of the chyme and are put in the blood stream to be taken to other parts of your body.
4. elimination- the chyme now enters the large intestines. The job of the large intestines is to absorb all the water in the chyme. After the water is absorbed, the chyme moves to the rectum, where it waits to exit the body through the anus.
