Ralls Soldier Member Of Patrol to Battle Through Jap Lines
With the 24th Infantry Division in the Philippines --
Private John H. Carr of Ralls, Texas was one of the members of a patrol that fought it's way through the Jap lines on Leyte to carry supplies and evacuate the wounded from a surrounded battalion. It required three days of hard fighting to reach the battalion. Coming back they brought the wounded on litters and when the Japanese ambused them again and again the amount of woundedmen was almost doubled, making twice as much work for the riflemen carrying the litters. When their food supply was echaused they ate the hearts of cocoanut trees, potatoes on vines and sugar cane. Their clothes were drenched with rain during the entire eight day march and their hands became wrinkled from being contantly wet and stayed that way for weeks. Pvt. Carr, one of the crack riflemen of this patrol, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. O. H. Carr of Ralls, Texas.
