Heroes: the Marine Corps

"...I was walking around some of the ruins -- when I saw a small piper cub up in the sky -- and within minutes there must of been about 100 Japanese Zero planes in the air strafing us..."

Lee Marvin (1924-1987), a true "wild one," enlisted in August 1942, served in the Marshall Islands (Eniwetok and Kwajalein), and was in the June 1944 Saipan invasion force. His company was ambushed and only six of 241 men survived. Marvin was, as he stated "shot in the ass" (a 9x3x3-inch wound), hospitalized 13 months, and discharged. Disabled and underemployed, he discovered summer stock acting, and progressed to Broadway plays, and motion pictures. For Cat Ballou (1965) he earned the best actor Academy Award, starred in television's M-Squad, and the classic war films The Dirty Dozen (1967), director John Boorman's Hell in the Pacific (1968) with Toshiro Mifune, and The Big Red One (1979).

He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery beside Joe Louis, the world heavyweight boxing champion.

Story: Actor Lee Marvin and Bob "Captain Kangaroo" Keeshan were both awarded the Navy Cross for heroism at Iwo Jima. Marvin supposedly told the story on the Johnny Carson Show.

Fact: Lee Marvin was wounded at Saipan, not at Iwo Jima. There is no evidence that he was awarded the Navy Cross. Bob Keeshan also served in the Marines but saw no combat.

Lee Marvin in Boot Camp?

Is this an image of Lee Marvin as a Marine Corps "boot"?

The Marine pictured is in the top row, standing and fifth from the left.

We are not certain of this.

The contributor of the image below sent this image to us of #1248 Platoon, USMC, San Diego.

His uncle, a Cpl. R. Wageman, seated bottom row, left center was one of the instructors for this platoon of USMC boots.
