Colourful Bread
Using a new paintbrush and food colouring, let the children paint patterns on a slice of bread - just make sure that the bread doesn't get too wet - then toast for a colourful treat.

Coloured Pasta/Rice
To colour pasta or rice, pour noodles/rice into a bowl or baggie and add rubbing alcohol until the noodles are covered. Add food colouring (be generous!). Let sit until the desired colour is reached - this may take hours. Remove the noodles/rice from the bag/bowl and place on paper towels for about 24 hours to dry. Use the coloured noodles/rice in a variety of craft projects.

Science Activities
Make Homemade Bread.
From the math skills of measuring to the scientific discussions about the transformation the bread dough goes through, this is a really neat activity. Best part... you get to eat your experiment!
Here is the bread recipe I use... it is tried and true as I have made it many times!

Ingredients:
1 package active dry yeast
1/4 cup very warm water (110 - 115 degrees)
2 cups milk
2 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons shortening
2 teaspoons salt
6 cups flour

Soften yeast in water. Heat milk, sugar, shortening, and salt until sugar dissolves. Cool to lukewarm. Stir in 2 cups of flour. Add the softened yeast and stir until smooth. Stir in the rest of the flour. Turn out onto a floured surface and knead until smooth (about 10 minutes). Shape into a ball and place in a greased bowl. Turn once to grease surface. Cover and let rise in a warm place until double in size (about 1 hour). Punch down. Divide into 2 balls and let sit for 15 minutes covered in bowl. Place in 2 loaf pans shaping dough into a loaf. Let rise. Bake in 375 degree oven about 45 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from pans and cool on wire rack.

Pasta Drop
This game is great for developing eye/hand co-ordination. Have bottles with various sized neck openings and pasta. Have the children stand or sit on a chair and try to drop the pasta into the neck of the bottle. As they perfect the drop, they can move to smaller and smaller necked bottles.

Songs
On Top of Spaghetti

On top of spaghetti
All covered with cheese
I lost my poor meatball
When somebody sneezed.

It rolled off the table
And onto the floor
And then my poor meatball
Rolled right out the door!

It rolled in a garden
And under a bush
Now my poor meatball
Was nothing but mush.

The mush was as tasty
As tasty could be
Early next summer
It grew into a tree.

The tree was all covered
With beautiful moss
It grew lovely meatballs
In a tomato sauce.

So if you like spaghetti
All covered with cheese
Hold on to your meatballs
And DON'T EVER SNEEZE!

A-A-A-CHOO !!

Pancakes
Sung to "Wash the Dishes, Dry the Dishes"

Mixin' pancakes
Stirrin' pancakes
Pop 'em in the pan
Fryin' pancakes
Flippin' pancakes
Catch 'em if you can!
