Halloween Candle Holders Submitted by

Give each a child a baby food jar. Have the kids cut or
rip of small pieces of black and orange tissue paper and glue onto the
jar - decoupage style to make black & orange mosaics or orange pumpkins!
Write the child's name on the bottom of the jar with a marker. Add
a votive!

Paper Plate Bat Submitted by Linda (lindafh)
Using a small paper plate, paint with black finger paint, let dry.
Cut triangle shapes from black construction paper(3 for each wing).
Cut a curve out of the short end of each triangle to represent the dip
on each wing joint. Glue wing pieces together (with tips together)
for form each wing. Fasten the wings to the back of the paper plate and
draw a face with white correction fluid or chalk. Punch a hole in
the top to hang.
Ghost Necklaces Submitted by Linda (lindafh)
Draw an outline of a ghost outline on a piece of waxed paper.
Hhave the kids trace the outline with white school glue and then fill in
with the glue. Let dry overnight, then the kids can add facial features
with a black marker. Poke a small hole in top of ghost and tie with string
or ribbon for a ghostly necklace.
Hairpin Ghost Necklace Submitted by Sandy(Michalla)
Plastic lid from margarine container or coffee can
Hairpin
Scraps of black construction paper
Black thread
White Glue
Scissors
Spread the hairpin apart slightly so that it forms the outline of a ghost.Tie a long black thread around the top of the hairpin. Then tie the two ends of the thread together to make a necklace. Set the hairpin on a plastic margarine lid and use a squeeze bottle of white glue to fill the area inside the hairpin. Cut tiny round eyes and a mouth from black paper and stick them in the glue near the top of the hairpin for the ghost's face.
Place the lid on a completely flat surface to keep the glue from running out of the hairpin, and allow the ghost to dry completely. When the glue is dry, peel the ghost off the lid. Trim off any extra glue that has run over the sides or too far from the bottom of the ghost.
When you aren't wearing your little ghost around your neck, you can hang it in a window. It will look very spooky with the light shining through it......
Spider Hat Submitted by Sandy(Michalla)
Cut sixteen strips of black paper. To make each of the spider's
eight legs, glue two strips together with a pipe cleaner in the middle.
Staple the front and back of each leg together in three places so the pieces
will hold together while the glue is drying. Then bend each leg to
form knees and feet. Cut a black paper headband large enough to fit around
each child's head. Cut a circle to make a head for the spider, and glue
it to the middle of the headband. Add eyes cut from construction
paper or wiggle eyes, and a red yarn smile. Staple four legs on each
side of the spider's head. Then staple the headband to fit your child's
head.

Gray construction paper
Black acrylic paint
Two 1/2" white two holed buttons
Scissors, paintbrush, glue, paper towels
Paint palm and fingers (NOT thumb) of one hand black. Spread fingers
apart and press hand on paper. Lift hand straight up. Reapply
paint to fingers only. Spread fingers apart and press on paper in
opposite direction. Lift hand straight up. Allow paint to dry.
Cut hand print leaving a slight border around fingers and palm forming
a spider. For
eyes, glue buttons horizontally on spider.
Options: You could use wiggle eyes in place of buttons...
Bend spider legs down to stand. Glue yarn or string on top of spider
to hang from your ceilings...... Or trim your bulletin boards with
fake spider web, and place spiders all around......
Button Jack O'Lanterns Submitted by Ruth (ruthjrc)
Cut out a pumpkin shape out of orange felt x2. Stuff with a bit
of batting and sew on buttons where the eyes, nose and mouth should be.
Cut out shapes for eyes and nose and different mouth shapes out of black
felt and cut a slit in the middle so they can be buttoned onto the pumpkin.
Children will have fun developing their fine motor skills designing a jack
o'lantern face by buttoning the shapes onto the pumpkins.

We do bats with preschoolers handprints that touch at the thumbs, with
black paint on white construction paper and draw in the markings with a
white correction pen.
Clay Pot Bats
Submitted by Ruth (RUTHJRC) ~ Turn a clay pot upside down and paint black. Cut bat wings from black fun foam or construction paper. Glue the wings to the back of the clay pot and add googly eyes to the front.
Bat Note or Artwork Holder
Submitted by Ruth (RUTHJRC) ~ Paint a clothes pin black. Glue fun foam or construction paper wings to the back. Add small googly eyes or cut from felt or paper. Add a magnet to the back and can be used on the fridge to hold notes. If the children make pairs of bats, they could hold pieces of artwork on the fridge also :-)
Halloween Fun for Infants

white and make foot print ghosts on black constuction paper. Then we color
in eyes with black markers.
Submitted by Ruth (RUTHJRC) ~Another neat one for infants is to cut a pumpkin shape from white paper and let them fingerpaint with baby food carrots. Doesn't matter if they put it in their mouths or not and it is the perfect colour!
Pop Bottle Bats Submitted by Ruth (ruthjrc)
You take a 2L pop bottle and cover with a black garbage bag - cut the
bag in 1/2 and just stuff excess into the opening and put the lid back
on... really simple! Then take a twig tape wings cut from the other 1/2
of the bag - tape the wings to the bottle. We added glow in the dark eyes
to the bat and then nestled them into the tree out front. They looked awesome
on Halloween night!

With white tempera paint (thinned down) let the kids make spider webs
on black construction paper. Add a few drops of white paint to the
paper and use a straw to "blow" the web across the paper.

Fingerpaint with orange paint (or red and yellow to make orange).
Use fingers to create a jack-o-lantern face on the pumpkin if you wish.
You can leave picture as is or cut into a pumpkin shape when dry.

Glue a circle of orange construction paper onto a baby food jar lid. Add a face with black construction paper shapes. Once dry, the lid will make a clicking noise if pressed in the center.

Use watered down white glue to cover the outside of a baby food jar with orange tissue paper. Let dry. Add a votive candle to the jar. Older children may want to make a face using black or yellow tissue paper.
Toilet Paper Roll Bats Submitted by Pat (PATRICIA6558)
Materials:
Toilet paper roll (empty of course)
Black construction paper
jiggle eyes
black paint
Need to do:
Let children paint the toilet paper rolls black. Cut bat wings from the construction paper. Make sure the wings are in one continuous shape, and large enough to cover the back side of the toilet paper roll and stick out at least 3 inches on both sides of the bat. Staple the bottom of the bat together to give the toilet paper roll a tappered look. Glue on jiggle eyes, the bigger the better. glue on the wings to the back of the bat. Can attach a string and hang them or let kids fly them around room. Make several and hang around the room along with some toilet paper ghost.

large size kleenex
Need to do:
Paint toilet paper roll white. Let dry. Carefully place over the top of the toll (in stand up position) the kleenex so it drapes down over the roll - a little glue along the rim of the roll will help hold the kleenex in place. Make black dots on the front of the kleenex for ghost eyes. Can attach string and hang it around the room with several others and with the bats Which looks good with the toilet paper scarecrows.

toilet paper rolls
3 inch wooden bead or staroform ball
scapes of cloth of a variety of colors (orange, yellow, etc.) cut into 2 inch squares
some straw
a small straw hat you can find at craft stores
jiggle eyes
brown paint
Need to do:
Paint the toilet paper roll brown. Glue down around the roll the little quares of cloth in a patch work design. Take a hole puncher and punch holes on two sides of the roll. In side some straw through the holes to look like straw arms. Little glue inside hole helps hold it in place. Glue on wooden bead on top of roll for head. Glue on jiggle eyes, and paint on a mischievious smile. Glue some straw on head, and trim. Lastly glue on little straw hat. They make good center pieces if you glue the scarcrow on a paper plate and then place some cut up straw around base of scarecrow, using glue on plate to hold it down. Accent it with some small pumpkin gords and small indian corn. and loose nuts, walnuts or acorns.
Halloween Napkins and/or Tablecloth Submitted by Tara (SHNSI73)
Have the children draw a simple shape (such as a pumpkin or candycorn) on a paper napkin with a pencil. Cut a large potato in half and press it firmly on the napkin, transferring the pattern to the potato. An adult then uses a paring knife to carefully carve around the shape, cutting away the pattern. Then let the children brush on some fabric paint and stamp the design onto some plain cloth napkins and/or tablecloth!
Tissue Paper Ghosts Submitted by Tara (SHNSI73)
Take a lollypop with a big head on it or a wadded up piece of kleenex and put it in the middle of a piece of kleenex. This will make the head. Gather rest of it down in middle so it looks like a ghost and tie with a black or orange pice of ribbon to hold it's shape.

Cut a soft paper plate in 1/2. Cut 4-6 inch long pieces of white crete paper and cut it in 1/2. Glue each strip of crete paper to the straight edge of the paper plate. Use the marker or crayon to draw eyes on your ghost. Use whole punch to cut hole in the center top of ghost. Thread string/yarn through hole and tie to hang up your ghost. The white crete paper will flutter in the breeze like a ghost.

Supplies:
1 small Styrofoam ball
1 medium Styrofoam ball
2 yellow pipe cleaners
tooth pick
black paint
Paint the Styrofoam balls with black paint and let dry. Poke toothpick through body and head. Cut 8-2 inch legs from pipe cleaners and insert into body of spider. Bend legs on end of pipe cleaner. You may add eyes if desired.

Cut two identical bodies of a spider. For the legs cut pieces of black yarn. Each piece of yarn should be three times longer then the width of the body. Lay the legs across on body shape, then lay the other body shape on top. Glue them together. Place them under a heavy object and let them dry. Glue a black thread to the middle of the body and let dry. Add eyes and hang spider from the ceiling.

Have one child sit in the center of a circle blindfolded. Then point to one child to say this person's name or make a sound (use an instrument/blow a whistle/etc)
The blindfolded child must use their sense of hearing to point in the direction or to the person that made the noise.

Use a mini, plastic, or felt pumpkin for this game. Have the children sit in a circle and pass the pumpkin around to music. When the music stops, the child holding the pumpkin is 'caught'. Continue playing.

UPair off children. One child is the mummy, the other the wrapper. Give the 'wrapper' a roll of toilet paper. When you say "GO", the wrappers start wrapping the other child until they are covered like a Mummy. First one to completely wrap the Mummy wins. You can also just do this for fun and not have a winner for the game - set a time limit and see if everyone can have their Mummy wrapped before the timer goes off.

Create a ghost from a large white cloth napkin. Decorate the face with a permanent marker. Inside the ghost head part, stuff with candies. Children pass the ghost around to music. Child holding the ghost when the music stops is 'caught' - all children continue playing. At the end of the game, open up the ghost and share the treats.
Halloween Candy Walk Submitted by Ruth (RUTHJRC)
Tape different Halloween characters to the floor (witch, bat, pumpkin, ghost, trick or treat bag, black cat, cauldron, broomstick, candy, etc). Have one character on the floor for each child playing (it's a good idea to have one or two extra so even the last child on has a choice) Cut out a copy of each of the characters and place in a small plastic play cauldron or bowl. Play music and children dance around the area. When the music stops, children must get on one of the characters. When all children are on a character, draw a paper from the cauldron (or bowl) - the children on the same character that was drawn gets to come up and choose a treat from the candy bowl.

Combine the grape juice and club soda in a large bowl. Arrange the apple pieces and raisins for a face in the bottom of a muffin tin (make enough faces for 1 per child). Lay an orange slice on top. Add enough orange juice to just cover the fruit ~ and freeze! With a melon baller scoop small balls of sherbet and re-freeze. When ready to serve add sherbet balls (eye balls) and frozen orange faces (jack o lanterns) to the punch! Serves 8-10
Frozen Jack O Lanterns Submitted by Linda (lindafh)
navel oranges (1 per child)
chocolate ice cream
thick black licorice (one 1" piece per pumpkin)
Slice the top off each orange. Gently remove the pulp, leaving a thick shell. Remove the pulp from the cut-off tops too. Cut Jack-O'Lantern faces into each orange. Punch a hole in the orange top ~ a straw works great for this! Freeze orange shells for at least an hour. Scoop ice cream into the frozen shells ~ making sure that ice cream does not melt ~ place orange shells and ice cream back in freezer to re-freeze if it softens too much. Set orange tops back on over the ice cream and insert a piece of licorice through the hole for a stem. Place in the freezer for at least 3 hours or until serving time.
Chocolate Spiders Submitted by Linda (lindafh)
1 cup dark chocolate wafers (for making chocolates)
Melt chocolate wafers in microwave or in a double boiler. Place
wax paper on cookie sheet. Add a small amount of the chocolate into a pastry
bag at a time (use a 1/8-inch or 1/4-inch tip) Squeeze chocolate onto wax
paper in the shape of spiders. Chill the spiders for about
10 minutes. Store in an airtight container in the freezer or fridge until
served.
Candied Apples Submitted by Linda (lindafh)
12 red delicious apples
12 wooden skewers
4 1/2 cups sugar
3/4 cup light corn syrup
1 tsp red food colouring
1 1/2 cups water
1 cup chopped peanuts
Grease a large cookie sheet and set aside. Wash and dry apples. Insert
a stick through stem, leaving about two inches sticking out. In saucepan
over medium heat, combine sugar, corn syrup, food colouring and water.
Cook, stirring
constantly, until ingredients are dissolved and liquid boils. Set a
candy thermometer in mixture and continue cooking, without stirring until
temperature reaches 290 degrees, about 20 minutes. Meanwhile place shopped
peanuts in
a bowl. Remove syrup from heat and dip the apples, one by one, to coat
evenly. Work quickly. As you dip each apple roll in peanuts to coat then
place on prepared cookie sheet. Let apples cool for at least an hour.

1 Pkg Fudge Brownie Mix (any brownie mix)
2 eggs
1/3 cup water
1/4 cup Oil
1 cup creamy chocolate frosting
26 pumpkin candies
1/2 cup Creamy Vanilla frosting
green food coloring
1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Line 26 muffin cups with foil liners or place
liners on baking sheet.
2. Combine Brownie mix, contents of fudge packet from mix, eggs,water
and oil in large bowl. Stir with spoon until well blended, about 50 strokes.
Fill each foil liner with 2 levels measuring tablesppons batter. Bake 15-17
minutes
or until firm. Cool 5-10 minutes in pans. Remove to cooling racks.
3. Place chocolate frostin in small saucepan. Melt on low heat, stirring
constantly. Frost top of 1 warm brownie with generous 1/2 teaspoonful melted
frosting. Top with 1 pumpkin candy; push down slightly.
4. Tint vanilla frosting with green food coloring. Place in decorating
bag fitted with small leaf tip.Pipe leaves around each pumpkin candy.
Hot Caramel Apples
4 large tart (granny smith) apples, cored (leaving the bottoms)
1/2 c. apple juice
8 t. brown sugar
12 red-hot candies
4 T. butter or margarine
8-12 caramels
1/4 t. ground cinnamon
whipped cream, optional
Peel about 3/4? off the top of each apple, place in a slow cooker. Pour juice over apples. Fill the center of each apple with 2 T. of brown sugar, 3 red-hots, 1 T. butter & 2 or 3 caramels. Sprinkle with cinnamon. Cover & cook on low for 4-6 hours, or until the apples are tender. Serve immediately with whipped cream if desired. It would also be good served warm with ice cream.

Chocolate Dipped Apples
4 medium apples
4 wooden pop sticks
1 pkg. (14 oz.) KRAFT Caramels
2 Tbsp. water
1-1/2 cups chopped PLANTERS Salted Peanuts
2 pkg. (4 oz. each) BAKER'S GERMAN'S Sweet Chocolate
2 tsp. margarine
Wash and dry apples; insert stick into stem end of each apple. Microwave caramels and water in deep microwavable bowl on HIGH 2 to 3 minutes or until caramels are melted and mixture is smooth, stirring every minute. Dip apples into hot caramel mixture; turn until well coated. Scrape excess caramel mixture from bottoms of apples. Roll bottom halves in peanuts. Place on greased tray. Refrigerate at least 15 minutes. Microwave chocolate and margarine in deep microwavable bowl on High 2 to 3 minutes until chocolate is almost melted, stirring after each minute. Stir until chocolate is completely melted. Drizzle chocolate generously over apples. Let stand on wax paper-lined tray until chocolate is firm.

Frightening Fingers
1 cup butter softened (no substitutes)
2 3/4 cups flour
1 cup confectioners sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 egg
1 teaspoon salt ( I never use)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
red decorating gel icing
1 teaspoon almond extract
1/2 cup sliced almonds
Cream butter and sugar in mixing bowl. Beat in the egg and extracts. In separate bowl mix flour,baking pwder and salt. Gardually add to the creamed mixture.. divide the dough into fourths. cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes or until easy to handy(I left it over night). Working w/1 piece of dough at a time, roll into 1 in balls. Shape balls into 3 in by 1/2 inch fingers. using the blade of a table knife, make an indentation on 1 end of each finger. Then make 3 close slashes in the middle of each finger for the knuckle. Place 2 in. apart on lightly greased baking sheets. Bake at 325 degrees for about 20 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool 3 minutes. Sqeeze a small amount of red gel on the nail end of the cookie;press a sliced almond over the gel for a nail,allowing the red gel to ooze around nail. Remove to wire rack to cool completely. Makes 5 dozen.

Autumn Apple Fritters
2 tart, medium cooking apples, such as Jonathan or Granny Smith
2/3 cup all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon powdered sugar
1/2 teaspoon finely shredded lemon peel
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1 egg
1/2 cup milk
1 teaspoon cooking oil
Shortening or cooking oil for deep-fat frying
Powdered sugar (optional)
Cinnamon sticks (optional)
1. Core apples and cut each apple crosswise into 6 slices. Set slices aside.
2. In a large bowl combine flour, the 1 tablespoon powdered sugar, the lemon
peel, and baking powder. In a medium bowl use a wire whisk or rotary beater
to beat egg, milk, and the 1 teaspoon cooking oil until combined. Add egg
mixture all at once to flour mixture; beat until smooth. Using a fork, dip
apple rings into batter; drain off excess batter.
3. Fry 2 or 3 fritters at a time in deep hot fat (365 degrees F.) for 1
minute on each side or until golden, turning once with a slotted spoon.
Drain on paper towels. Repeat with remaining fritters. Sprinkle warm
fritters with sifted powdered sugar, if desired. Cool on wire racks. To
serve, thread fritters onto cinnamon sticks, if desired. Makes 12 fritters.

Chocolate Crispy Treats
4 cups POST Cocoa PEBBLES Cereal
6 squares BAKER'S Semi-Sweet Baking Chocolate
1/2 cup light corn syrup
1 Tbsp. butter or margarine
1/2 tsp. vanilla
Place cereal in large bowl. Microwave chocolate, corn syrup and butter in large microwavable bowl on High 2-1/2 minutes, stirring halfway through cooking time. Stir in vanilla. Pour chocolate mixture over cereal; mix well. Press firmly into greased 9-inch square pan or shape into 1-inch balls using slightly moistened hands. Refrigerate until set. Cut into squares.

How To Evenly Press Cereal Mixture Into Pan: Mix cereal mixture as directed. Place in greased 9-inch square pan.
Use bottom of greased drinking glass or metal measuring cup to firmly press cereal mixture into pan.
