Make a Display Box for "B"
Decorate a box with the letter "B" theme. Inside the box place items (or pictures of items) whose names begin with B. Some ideas below:

Recognizing the Letter "B"
Introduce the letter "B" to the children by showing them the written word "balloon" and helping them to see that it begins with an "B". Cut a large balloon shape out of paper and write the letter "B" on it. Have the children tear or cut out magazine pictures beginning with the letter "B" and then glue the pictures on the balloon shape.

Have a Teddy Bear's Picnic!
Ask the children to bring their favorite bear or other furry friend from home to share the picnic. Sing Teddy Bears' Picnic.

Boo Boo Bears
Cut out a brown bear from light or dark brown construction paper and glue onto blue paper, then add a band aid, buttons down his front, black beans for eyes and a pink bow (girl) or a paper bandana on its head.

Barefoot in the Park
Take off the kids shoes and socks and walk barefoot in the back yard!

Set up A Bake Shop in Dramatic Area
Supply muffin tins, rolling pins, cake pans, pie pans, cookie sheets, cookie cutters, hats, white aprons and white play dough

Building with Boxes
A fun outside activity! Supply the kids with lots of boxes in all shapes and sizes. Add paint in all colors! Let them build skyscrapers, or a car, or a train, or whatever their little hearts desire!

Bear Habitats
Brown Play dough using Wilton Cake Paste for coloring.

Cut "door" in margarine tubs for entry to the "cave". The children can cover the margarine tubs with play dough to create "bear dens." Add the pine branches & twigs as trees in the forest. They can create play dough bears and other animals.

Birthday
Put birthday items in the dramatic area: tablecloth, napkins, hang a large pic of a birthday cake with candles near the table, birthday cards and envelopes, boxes and gift wrap, scotch tape, party hats, noise makers (!!!), make a fake cake out of round styrofoam pieces and let the kids decorate with plastic or silk flowers, ribbon, small squares of colorful tissue paper poked in with a popsicle stick - make one large 3 tiered cake or individual smaller ones.

Celebrate All the Year's Birthdays at Once!
Give everyone party hats to wear. Sing "Happy Birthday to Me". Give out small gifts of stickers, balloons, bookmarks, or cupcakes at the end of the program. These could arrive in one big wrapped present for everybody.

Balloon Creatures
Blow up 9" balloons. Cut out 'feet' and tuck balloon stem into a slot cut into the feet to stand. Kids can use markers and stickers to make funny faces!

Bread Dough Buddies
Make a batch of "bread dough" (recipe below). Let the children create their buddies using raisins, cranraisins, chocolate chips, chopped dried fruit, etc. And bake!

Strike up the Band

Teddy Bear Cakes
Rice cakes spread with peanut butter. Use raisins and cheerios for facial features. Mini pretzels make great teddy bear ears.

Butterscotch Chip Cookies
1 cup butter or margarine
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups all purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 cups semi-sweet butterscotch chips

Cream butter with electric mixer. Add sugar and blend until smooth. Add eggs and vanilla. Mixing well. In separate bowl, combine dry ingredients. Add to creamed mixture and blend together. Drop by teaspoonful onto greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350oF for 10-15 minutes or until lightly browned.

Banana Bread
1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
2 eggs, beaten
1/3 cup corn syrup
1 cup mashed ripe banana (3 medium)

Stir dry ingrediants together in a large bowl. Stir in nuts. Mix remaining ingredients together in another bowl. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients, pour in liquid, stir only until flour is moistened. Spoon into a greased loaf pan (8.5"x4.5"x2.5"). Bake at 350oF for 55-60 minutes. Store 6 hours or overnight before cutting.

Sunflower Banana Bread
1 pkg. honey bran muffin mix
1/3 cup miracle whip (or other mayo type dressing)
1/3 cup water
1/2 cup sunflower seeds (no shells!)
1 egg
1/4 cup flour
1 ripe banana, mashed

Heat oven to 350F. In a medium bowl mix muffin mix, sunflower seeds and flour. In a small bowl mix remaining ingredients, blending well. Add liquid to dry ingredients, mixing just until moistened. Pour into a greased (8.5X4.5 inch) loaf pan. Bake for 40 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan 10 minutes; remove from pan and cool completely on wire rack. Slice and serve.

Banana Bugs
Have the kids poke pretzel sticks into a not-too-ripe banana for legs and antennae. Use peanut butter for eyes and use as glue to attach a raisin spine.

Banana Boats
Cut bananas in half lengthwise and remove peel. Combine equal parts of creamy peanut butter, crunchy whole grain cereal and chopped dates (can substitute any dried fruit here) and spread on banana halves.

Banana Smoothie
Blend together - 4 cups milk, 2-3 bananas, 1 teaspoon vanilla, 1 tablespoon honey (optional), 3/4 cup skim milk powder. Sprinkle with nutmeg.

Bagel Wiches
Cut bagel in half lengthwise. Spread with cream cheese and add sliced fruit such as strawberries, peaches, pears, apples....

Bread Dough Buddy Recipe

Frozen Banana Lollies (Serves 8)

100 g (4 oz.) desiccated coconut
red, blue, and green food coloring (powdered or liquid)
8 small bananas
a little maple syrup
8 popsicle sticks

Divide the coconut into three small bowls and add a small amount of food coloring to each. Stir well, until the coconut is evenly colored. Pour the red, blue and green colored coconut on to separate plates and spread it out evenly. Peel the bananas and cut a small piece of one end of each one, to make it straight. Carefully press a popsicle stick into the straight end of each banana, taking care not to push the stick in too far, as it night break through the side. Pour some maple syrup into a bowl. Holding the popsicle stick and using a pastry brush, brush an even coating of maple syrup over each banana. Put on a plate when coated. Still holding the popsicle sticks, dip and roll the bananas in the colored coconut until they are coated evenly. Lay the bananas on a baking sheet covered with clear film. The bananas must not touch. Freeze for 4 hours. To serve: Remove from freezer and wait about 15 minutes to let the bananas soften a bit before you eat them.
