Prop Box Idea for the Letter Oo = Mittens
(Using The Three Little Kittens Story) Fill the prop box with items that will help the children recreate the story after reading it together. Some suggestions: A copy of the book, 3 sets of different mittens (for practice making pairs), a small standing clothesline and clothespins, an empty pie tin, play dough, rolling pin and play dough toys for “making” the pie.

Make a Display Box for "Oo"
Decorate a box with the letter "Oo" theme. Inside the box place items (or pictures of items) whose names begin with Oo. Some ideas below:
Food
Olives and oranges
Animals, Insects & Birds
Orangutan, owl, octopus and ostrich
Miscellaneous
octagon, ocean

Or fill an album with pictures of items that begin with the letter "Oo"


Recognizing the Letter "Oo"
Introduce the letter "Oo" to the children by showing them the printed lower and upper case Oo Have letter Oo's hidden in the room and let the children find them. Sound out the letter Oo and words that begin with the letter.

Ocean Scenes
Have the children create an ocean scene by spreading glue on the bottom of the paper and sprinkling sand on it. Next, they can cut out different sea creatures and attach them to the paper. Finally, cover the paper with blue Saran Wrap to make it look like it is under water.

Octopus
Let the kids put finger paint all over their hands (in any combination that they wish) then have them put a hand print on the paper. Next have them put another handprint overlapping the last, but pointing in the opposite direction. The base of the hand creates the body of the octopus. The fingers make the tentacles.

Ocean in a Bottle
Let your children put sand and small rocks in a bottle. Then have them add small plastic sea creatures, and some aquarium gravel. Fill with water. Tint blue if desired. Note: Super glue the lids shut so your children cannot open them.

Sensory Table Idea for the Letter Oo = Ocean Put a layer of sand in the bottom of sensory table or some Rubbermaid boxes. Add some plastic ocean toys (animals, fish and scuba divers) and seashells. Fill with water. Add blue food coloring, if desired.

An ostrich has two long legs (Hold up 2 fingers.)
And can lay many large eggs. (Touch together index fingers and thumb for large egg.)
She’s the largest of all the birds, (Hold hands up high like wings.)
And she can’t fly. Isn’t that absurd? (Put hands on hips.)

Octopus

An octopus has 8 long arms. (Hold up eight fingers.)
It lives in the sea, but do not be alarmed! (Wave hands back and forth to indicate no harm.)
He squirts out ink, when he is the prey (Clap hands when saying the word squirts.)
And grows a new arm when it’s torn away. (Hold up an arm.)

Recipes

O's in Orange Juice
Have each child measure 1/2 cup orange juice into a paper cup. Provide each child with a third of a banana to cut into slices. Show the children how to poke out a hole in the center of each banana slice with a straw, forming O's. Have the children drop the banana O's into the juice. Give each child a few pretzel sticks with which to fish out the O's as they eat and drink.
