Crafts & Activities

You Are My Sunshine
large paper plates
yellow tempera paint
glitter
yellow construction paper or streamers
glue

Cut a hole in the center of the paper plate large enough for a child's face. The children can paint the sun ring with yellow paint and while the paint is still wet, sprinkle with gold glitter. Allow to dry. Cut elongated triangles (sun rays) from the yellow construction paper (or long pieces of yellow streamers) and glue around the outside edge of the sun ring. (You may wish to add string or narrow elastic to the sun ring so it stays put on the child's face).

Extra Activity: Wear your sun faces and sing "You Are My Sunshine"

Make Lemonade
Give each child a lemon half and ask them to squeeze the lemon juice into a glass. Add water and sugar to make lemonade.

Lemon Prints
Cut lemons in half and let sit out overnight to dry slightly. Dip into yellow paint and make prints. (a dark paper works best)

Sun Catchers
small strong paper plates (or heavy card stock)
yellow cellophane
yellow ribbon
glue

Cut the center out of the paper plate. Decorate with crayons or markers. Cut a piece of yellow cellophane a bit larger than the cut out area. Glue to the paper plate. Attach a yellow ribbon and tie in a bow. Hang in a window.

Make Sunflowers
small paper plates
yellow tissue paper (cun into petal shapes)
yellow tempera paint
sunflower seeds
green construction paper

Paint the paper plates with yellow tempera paint. While still wet press yellow tissue petals around the outside of the paper plate. When dry, glue sunflower seeds to the center of the place. Attach green stems and leaves. Hang on the wall. Display real sunflowers or pictures for the children to see.

Corn Cob Painting
Wash the corn cobs and allow to dry several days. Make print pads by placing folded paper towels in shallow containers and pour yellow tempera paint on top. The kids can roll the corn cobs in the paint and then roll on paper to make prints. You could also cut some cobs in half and dip into paint, then press on paper to make corn cob "flowers". Add stems and leaves.

Make Banana Pudding
Give each child one tablespoon of instant banana pudding in a clean baby food jar. Add 2 tablespoons cold milk and watch as the content turns yellow! Put lids on tight and shake for about 45 seconds. Then eat!! Serve with sliced bananas.

Star Search! Submitted by Ruth (ruthjrc)
Cut a yellow star out of construction paper. Hide the star somewhere in the room. Sing this song as you search for the star...

Twinkle, Twinkle, Yellow star,
How I wonder where you are.
Let's go looking here and there,
Let's go looking everywhere.
Twinkle, twinkle, Yellow star,
How I wonder where you are.
