Notes for HENRY "HARRY" LEIGH LEE:

Henry, with brothers Richard and George, immigrated to Virginia in 1636.

He was born and baptized on May 22, 1597 in Oswestry Parish, Morton Regis, Shropshire Province of England. Dr. Leigh arrived in the New World in 1636, settled his family in York Co., VA and became the owner of huge acreage's of land, including his plantation known as Kiskiack (Cheeskiack). The 1650 house is one the oldest structures of its type in America. And it is one of Virginia's finest examples of 17th century architecture. Henry Leigh, was not only a physician and plantation owner; he had quite an interest in the shipping business, tobacco being one of his largest transports. He sat on the bench of the House of Burgesses. He and Marah Adkins had four children: Henry, John, Mary, and Ann. Henry Leigh, died in 1657. His widow Marah later married his attorney George Wale.

Notes for JAMES "LEIGH" LEE:

James Leigh, born 1645 and died in 1728 lived in Warwick Co., VA. In 1684, he carried an express to Co. Bridger for the Virginia Assembly since his ancestors owned ocean going mercantile boats. It is believed to mean that he used his boat for hire to the government when the assembly building burned in 1698, the Assembly met in his house in Jamestown, about 6 miles from present day Williamsburg, VA.

James Leigh and his wife Sarah had seven (7) children: James Jr., (1670 - 1738), Sarah, Milly, Elizabeth, Lionel, Patience, and John. Soon they moved to a new home in Bath, NC in 1702. In 1703 he was appointed as a Commissioner of her Majesty's Customs between Neuse and Pamtico Rivers in Bath Co., NC. This was a position of trust and one only allotted to outstanding citizens of integrity.

James Leigh, Esq., prominent in court and civic works signed the act of the Assembly incorporating Bath Town, the act regulating North Carolina's first public library in 1705, and was one of the library's first commissioners and trustees. He was made lawful attorney for former North Carolina governor, Robert Daniel. He witnessed a will of friend and neighbor, JOHN LAWSON, (North Carolina's first great historian) and two or more governors. After Sarah's death, he married Elizabeth Rodgers Dereham, and after her death, he married Anne Leigh Darden.

Once again the family name is spelled differently, James Lee Jr., (1670-1738) married Mary Peyton and lived in Beaufort Co., NC (the once Bath County, NC).

At Bath, NC, in the St. Thomas Parish Church, built in 1734, there is a huge old BIBLE, which was sent from England in 1700, and was used by the Lee's before and after the church was built. James Jr., had four children: PETER, JOHN, MARY, AND LEVI (Levy) Lee.

Vernie Dennis Lee

Services for Vernie Dennis Lee, a former resident of Glencoe, were held Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, in New Iberia, La.

She was born June 3, 1908, in Glencoe, the daughter of Frank and Hattie (Casebeer) Dennis.

She married Rile Lee and resided in Glencoe until his retirement, then moved to New Iberia, La. After a brief stay in Biloxi, Miss., she returned to New Iberia.

Her beloved birthplace was always home to her. It was at a tent revival at age 12 she gave her life to the Lord along with her dear mother. Vernie's love of God held true through trials and troubles. She will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.

She earned many awards with her art and crafts. One of her paintings that she was most proud of is hanging in the Glencoe State Bank and it is a painting of the No. 83 Engine train she and her husband, Rile, took on their honeymoon. She was also a seamstress for 14 years in Glencoe. She taught painting in New Iberia.

She was an accomplished musician in piano, accordion, organ, guitar and steel guitar.

She was predeceased by her husband, Rile; son, Donald Lee; daughter, Phyllis Lee Fouquir; and grandson, Ross Anthony Fouquir.

She was also predeceased by five sisters: Wilma Dennis Himes, Gladys Dennis, Ethel Dennis Lee, Eunice Dennis Kennedy and Gwendolyn Dennis Fuller; and three brothers, Lloyd Dennis, George Dennis and Marshall Dennis.

She is survived by six grandchildren: Kim Fouquir, New Iberia, Mitch Fouquir, New Iberia, Theresa Fouquir, New Iberia, Debra Carnes, Lexington, S.C., Cindy Long, Vancleave, Miss., and Sandra Lee, Wiggins, Miss.; 12 great grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.
