Kihon (Basic)1


If you have an area where you can tape out a large uppercase I on the floor it will help you as you learn this Kata.  I have drawn out a letter I and numbered the different technique.  The arrows will help you to learn the right direction to turn.


Start at the number 1 position in the middle and at the bottom of the I.

1 -  This is where you bow and then go to ready position.  Also known as Yoi and Kamate.  Turn  90 degrees to your left.

2-  As you turn go into Nekotsudachi (cat stance) and do a Yoyuke (inside forearm block)  You should be blocking with your right hand.

3-  Step into Sanchin stance and do an Ozuke (front punch)  Turn 180 degrees to your right.

4-  As you turn go into Nekotsudachi (cat stance) and do a Yoyuke (inside forearm block)

5-  Step into Sanchin stance and do an Ozuke (front punch)  Turn 90 degrees to your left

6-  As you turn go into Nekotsudachi (cat stance) and do a Yoyuke (inside forearm block)

7-  Step forward into sanchin stance and do an Ozuke (front punch).

8-  Repeat step 7 as you step forward again.

9-  Repeat step 8 as you step forward again.

* * * This is where you will do your big 270 degree turn.  * * *

10-  As you turn go into Nekotsudachi (cat stance) and do a Yoyuke (inside forearm block)

11-  Step into Sanchin stance and do an Ozuke (front punch)  Turn 180 degrees to your right.

12-  As you turn go into Nekotsudachi (cat stance) and do a Yoyuke (inside forearm block)

13-  Step into Sanchin stance and do an Ozuke (front punch)  Turn 90 degrees to your left

14-  As you turn go into Nekotsudachi (cat stance) and do a Yoyuke (inside forearm block)

15-  Step forward into sanchin stance and do an Ozuke (front punch).

16-  Repeat step number 15 as you step forward again.

17-  Repeat step number 16 as you step forward again.

* * * This is where you will do your big 270 degree turn.  * * *

18-  As you turn go into Nekotsudachi (cat stance) and do a Yoyuke (inside forearm block)  You should be blocking with your right hand and your left foot should be the one forward.

19-  Step into Sanchin stance and do an Ozuke (front punch)  Turn 180 degrees to your right.

20-  As you turn go into Nekotsudachi (cat stance) and do a Yoyuke (inside forearm block)

21-  Step into Sanchin stance and do an Ozuke (front punch)


Don't forget to finish by going into a good ready stance and bowing.
