Since 1993, Tristan McCall (otherwise known as Twaddlebersch) has been deeply involved in music as a form of art...and anti-art. He released a myriad of cassettes through his own small label, Welten Crease and now has a handfull of upcoming releases from various labels including Childish Tapes. He sat down to talk to us about his activities.

CHILD: What is "twaddlebersch"?
TB: A Dada museum in Cairo.
CHILD: Is it nice?
TB: Yeah.
CHILD: What prompted you into making experimental music?
TB: After losing my hearing, everything seemed uneven. Regular music sounded strange to me.. so basically I just started doing music that sounded right.
CHILD: How did you lose your hearing?
TB: I really didn't lose my hearing. But the rest of that is true.
CHILD: Who are your musical influences?
TB: I really don't think of Twaddlebersch as music, really because it doesn't have the same structure or meaning as conventional songs do. I don't go about making a Twaddlebersch piece the same way someone would a song. But the fact is that I do not really know what exactely I mean to do and I'm not sure if what I do would be considered music or if it couldn't be.
CHILD: So it's pure unadulterated dada?
TB: Yeah or something like that or similar to that effect.
CHILD: You released a few cassettes on your own label, Welten Crease. How did that come about?
TB: I recorded a few experiments and wanted to document them so I put them under the label of Welten Crease and there it was. The first one I did was "Giraffe on Bicycle" which was a collage, or anti-collage, of sounds and images that you can't see but you can hear in terms of sight.
CHILD: Is there a theme?
TB: In a way, yes. But really it's more of an inclusion of both sides. No there but having a theme of "being" and/or sounds being made despite silence.
CHILD: Did those tapes make an impression to anyone/anywhere?
TB: Not a big impression mainly because I didn't let many get out. I was afraid of things getting out of hand. A few people got back to me including Jordan from Childish Tapes (but at that time he was just running LoudCat Products) and also Henry from Temporary Ltd and Luke from Caesar Cimmerian. When Jordan formed Childish Tapes he asked for me to do a tape (which turned out to be "a crystal swamp") and he is also going to put out my back catalogue including some tapes that I didn't have a chance to put out on Welten Crease.
CHILD: What's this I hear about a box set?
TB: Yes.. the Twaddlebox... It's going to be a 50-tape set and Childish is going to release it.
CHILD: Like Merzbow?
TB: Yea, I heard about that. I have never heard Merzbow's material but apparently he's prolific.
CHILD: How much will this Twaddlebox cost?
TB: $70 U.S. dollars... expensive but it comes with lot of unreleased material that I've worked on plus very new stuff that was recorded specifically for the box set. It'll also have all of the stuff I've released so far.
CHILD: Do you find that experimental music gives you the freedom to do what you want?
TB: Yes, I feel that I can do what I need to do and just leave it as that. And if I decide to do nothing, then ok. There should be no standards or limitations.
