YIN+b
(interview taken from the Childish zine issue one.)
There is no other sci-fi noise monster other
than Yin+B, slick and sardonic, this is the sort of noise that
the big boys hate: unfocused, underproduced, unprofessional. But
don't let that stop you from hopping aboard his
non-Aristotelianism spacecraft of noise. He doesn't apologize for
his lateness.....in fact, he lives for it.
CHILD: When did you start doing what you're doing?
YINB: Around 1997..
CHILD: What attracted you to this form of music?
YINB: The freedom, really. The fact that I could do whatever I
want, in a way.
CHILD: Did you then find that there isn't that much freedom?
YINB: Yea, that's my whole point. The fact that it isn't much
different from any other music scene. But screw it, I got my
stuff, I like making the noise, so I do it.
CHILD: You seem to have a fascination with science fiction...
YINB: Anything from the 1940's through the 1960's... novels, that
is. Some movies, too but mostly books.
CHILD: Do you think that the noise scene has become a parody of
itself?
YINB: Oh yea, I swear it's like a kindergarten class on downers
or PCP. Too much mudslinging and/or moody self-pity. God, how
many records could you make with a serial killer theme, anyway?
And there are actually critics out there...with actual standards
for what makes "good" noise. When I actually noticed
this I almost shit my pants. Seriously, I almost shit my pants.
CHILD: Well, good noise is good noise. What do you think good
noise is?
YINB: Gee.. I guess the APPROPRIATE answer would be Merzbow or
some other Japanoise group. Or perhaps *CENSORED*, yea.. they're
supposed to be pretty big here in the states. So, hmm, I dunno
what I should say. Shouldn't I call Thurston Moore or something?
CHILD: You don't listen to any noise?
YINB: Sometimes I do.. but mainly just unknown people who I trade
tapes with. I did buy that Japanese/American Noise Treaty cd set,
though. And I'll contradict myself by saying that I enjoyed the
Merzbow track on there.
CHILD: Did you like any of the American artists?
YINB: The only one that I really remember is the track by Dog.
It's really good.
CHILD: I just acquired your release on Childish Tapes. It's in an
Imodium box. Any reason for this?
YINB: Yea.. it was Jordan's idea.. it fit with the title of the
tape.."Your ego is like my poopee".
CHILD: I notice that it's not as noisy. There's a lot of sampling
and loops. Is this a start of a change for you?
YINB: For Childish I wanted to do something that wasn't full-on
harsh noise. I got my friends from Apples to Carburetors to give me an excerpt from one of their tapes
and I used a great portion of that. Then Steve (of Eunuch) let me
use some of his records to make loops and that's that. I'll
continue with harsh noise with future releases, though.
CHILD: I know I got off the subject but.... why the fascination
with sci-fi?
YINB: I just love it and when I do noise I am usually fantasizing
about flying off in a spaceship or being on some exotic planet
all by myself.
CHILD: Will you ever stop recording noise?
YINB: Yeah..once I finish building my space ship. Shouldn't be
long.
