The 9th was one of the first to attempt to "train" RVN units and to mount joint operations. The problems were apparent to us from the beginning. After we demonstrated grenade throwing technique, an officer had to threaten the troops with his 45 to get a "volunteer" to try it. When they attempted live practice (without us there), they sustained casualties.
