The Old C & O Railroad Passenger Depot
773 and 787 Hambley Boulevard
The Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad came into Pikeville in 1905; the drawings for this passenger terminal are dated 1922 and work started in April 1923. This Classic Revival structure cost around $10,000 to construct. Originally the complex was composed of a passenger and a baggage terminal that were connected by an overhead shed made of wood and cast-iron. The buildings themselves were constructed with elegance and attenion to detailing. The passenger terminal has Flemish bond brick with a pedimented portico supported by two pair of Ionic columns at the entrance from Caroline Avenue. Brick quoins appear on the corners and ornate bulls eye openings decorate the attic vents. The structure is one story with a slate roof. These passenger and baggage terminals are the only link to Pikeville's past association with the railroad. The baggage terminal, above, currently houses the Pike County Chamber of Commerce and the passenger terminal, below, currently houses the Big Sandy Heritage History Center.
