Pikeville is located on U.S. 23 in Pike County, Kentucky. Listed as one of the top 20 small towns in America, Pikeville is proud of its unique heritage and natural beauty and strives to preserve them both while attempting to promote tourism in the Big Sandy region.
Pike County, originally part of the immense area that was encompassed by old Floyd County, Kentucky, was formed in 1822 and the county seat was established in 1824 and called Piketon after Colonel Zebulon M. Pike. The name was later changed to Pikeville. Now a modern, centrally located town, Pikeville is the major industrial and financial center of East Kentucky. The Pikeville Cut-Through, the largest earthmoving project in the continental United States, only rivaled by the building of the Panama Canal, was completed in 1987 in an effort to prevent flooding in the town.
