West Virginia

The US50 - A guide to the fifty states.  On October 24, 1861, residents of the thirty-nine counties in western Virginia approved the formation of a new Unionist state. The accuracy of these election results have been questioned, since Union troops were stationed at many of the polls to prevent Confederate sympathizers from voting. At the Constitutional Convention, which met in Wheeling from November 1861 to February 1862, delegates selected the counties for inclusion in the new state of West Virginia.
Wildernet - West Virginia.  This small eastern state encompasses vast nationally-administered lands that provide excellent accessibility to many recreation pursuits. West Virginia is teeming with historical, natural and cultural resources.  Although the state is small, its natural areas contain diverse geographic features supporting many different activities. The eastern portion of the state contains the largest amount of public lands. Within this region is the Monongahela National Forest, which consists of 850,000 acres of hardwood and coniferous forests. The George Washington National Forest lies on the northeastern West Virginia border with Virginia. This area is characterized by the Allegheny Mountains and the highest elevations within the state.

The Ground Beneath Our Feet--Reconfiguring Virginia.  In the winter of 1860-61 Virginians disagreed, debated, and eventually waged war on one another. Virginia split in the crisis and the map of the commonwealth changed. By 1863 western Virginians created a separate state and declared themselves sovereign and independent from Virginia.

Nine Regions of Virginia.  The human geography of contemporary Virginia is the product of complex interaction between the state's physical environment and its human population. The diverse physiographic regions of the state--the Coastal Plain, the Piedmont, the Blue Ridge, the Shenandoah Valley, and the Appalachian Plateau--are important influences, but they are not the only factors explaining regional population distribution and economic activity in the Commonwealth.
Parks, Forests, Tourism in Virginia.  Tourism is big business in Virginia, as shown by the travel statistics and the associated local economic impact. Tourism generated over $11 billion in sales and contributed to 700,000 jobs, according to the research of the Virginia Tourism Corporation.
Southwest Virginia Geography of Virginia.  Today, the southwestern edge of Virginia is Cumberland Gap. At one time, however, Virginia stretched much further west. After Virginia ceded its western land claims to the new national government in the 1780's, the southwestern edge of the state was on the Mississippi River. Kentucky became an independent state in 1792, so at that point Virginia no longer included the Cumberland River watershed west of the Allegheny Front. The shape of Virginia's western boundaries changed again after West Virginia became an independent state in 1863, leaving only a tiny portion of the Levisa Fork, Big Sandy, and Tug Fork watersheds in what became Southwest Virginia

The Coal Communities of Southern West Virginia.  Up in the hollows and along narrow roads tucked between tall mountains lie close-knit communities. Often the families have lived there for generations. Their lives revolved around the church and the school. Many of the men worked in the mines, and later some women, too. They hunted and fished in a land rich with wildlife and native plants.
Now their communities increasingly seem like they are under attack from huge mining projects known as mountaintop removal since they can take up to 500 feet off the tops of mountains. In some areas, extensive underground mining is going on at the same time.
